He did a hellova lot better than Ponting did this test. Pontings footwork were as slow as Jo Angel on the dancefloor!

With 3 slips, 2 gullies and a short leg. He got good value for his shots because of the attacking field (which has been a part of the Hayden/Langer early scoring rates)

True - Ponting only makes runs when test series are there to be won. We don't want that type in the team do we?

Waugh S. has just added to the conjecture - what the hell do we do with him now? I think we have just looked about 4-5 years into the future this test match - no Warne, no McGrath, no Australian attack????

The problem with the Australian attack is that it is too reliant on the 2 bowlers.

in 2000 it was McGrath and Lee who were dominating, Warne was struggling and Miller/MacGill were chipping in occasionally.

in 2001 it was McGrath and Gillespie. Lee had his elbow problems and Warne was still struggling.

in 2002 it has been McGrath and Warne. Gillespie has been bowling well for no reward, and Bichel/Lee have done SFA.

Now McGrath and Warne have been injured, we're up **** creek.

i think we will plateau out for a period of a season or two when McGrath/Warne go, but i think we have a lot of talent coming through, it is just they are rather young at the moment. Noffke, Rofe are two that can take over, just probably not for another few seasons. Brant will also eventually be a big star if he keeps progressing the way he does.

We'll be right in the long run, but our bowling attack will even out with the rest of the world for a period, but we'll get back on top eventually and be just as good as today.

Yep fully agree.Bichel isnt good enough,Gillespie keeps breaking down and Lee needs to keep improving but on the whole i think we need to find some quality bowlers in the next few years if we are going to maintain our dominance

I think what this is also showing us is that we have been blessed/bloody lucky in the past few years by having so many champions in the same team, which is something that just can't continue - hopefully it means when the Poms come out in 4 yrs time it will be a more evenly matched series.........

Everyone lamented the lack of fast bowlers when Dennis Lillee retired, but a year later an 18 year old Craig McDermott came on the scene, then as his career was coming to an end we saw the emergence of a young and raw Glenn McGrath.
I wouldn't be preaching gloom and doom just yet.

McDermott took quite a while to get up to his later high standard I seem to recall, but you're right, it remains to be seen how the current crop will fare once they get the chance.
