Who plays on him this week? N Bassett for me. Has done a great job in the past and matches up better than Rutten

Rutten was made for this task. If he plays CHF then maybe McGregor.

Bassett on the third tall will love playing the SCG and attacking at all costs. He can also be the second man up against Hall.

Ben Rutten, then McGregor, Bassett as last option.

why last option? Hall hasnt beaten Bassett in recent yrs. I cant remember him kicking more than 2-3 on him.

Rutten 1st because he is developing into our 1st choice FB, is physicaly well matched to Hall, did well against him last time (except for a 10 minute period) & needs to play on the best opposition to continue his development.

McGregor next (if & when Hall moves out to CHF) because he is our 1st choice CHB, the senior "tall" defender of the group.

Bassett 3rd choice because his role has changed within the side & he can provide important run from the back 1/2.

That's my opinion anyway.

Hall rates Bassett as one of his toughest opponents he's played. Bassett should be given first crack.

Rutten. This is why he's in the team, to play full back on this type of player.

These for me are the reasons Rutten starts on Hall. If we are serious about this kids development then we take a chance..dont forget Basset will be right next to him... I think we can afford to play Rutten. He is our 10 year full back so leave him there and let him learn.

My question is with a small ground what do we do with McGregor?

Rutten for mine. Bassett has done well on Hall in the past, but he's playing a different and very important role coming out of defence this year. Plus, I think Bassett will have a longer career if he doesn't have to constantly take on opponents that are much bigger than him.

Bassett for me. Barry Hall is a leading forward, doesn't do the one on one body contests like a Lynch. Rutten for me would be too slow.

How many times did Big Barry have a couple of metre head start on Mal Michael last week, nearly everytime. He has a very explosive first 10 metres, which is why I lean towards Bassett.

If Rutten does get the job, our midfielders and half backs have to nullify the disposal going in to Sydney's forward line to help the truck out.

For me I reckon Rutten is the bloke for the job. This despite the fact that Hall rated our hound as the best full back in the competition last year on White Line Fever (fox footy).

thats a fair point but rutten did pretty well on him for most of the game last year

lets just hope hall doesnt get too many soft free kicks like he did against the lions

Did Rutten or Bassett play on him in the trial game? I cant remember; but I do remember that someone got inside his head; Hall gave away alot of silly free's.

Smith - He took an overhead mark in the sanfl on the weekend, therefore he must be ready for a call up.

That'd be one way to get Smith off our list.

Hall would kill him - literally!!

Vale Smith - R.I.P. ;)

Agree 100% DV2.....the only way these fellas are going to learn the caper is by starting in their own positions...Truck FB, Kenny CHB.....we should start games on OUR terms as Plan A........then make a move if there's a problem. Sure flankers can chop and change from game to game.....but as a starting point I would like to see our spine go to their positions.......then swap if it's not working.........that's what headsets, phones. and runners are for.... ;)

bassett what a joke, if that happened it would be straight to the goal square and give him as much space as possible. Hall has changed his game considerably since bassett last played on him, he is no longer a leading forward. Rutten will be it, unless they play jolly deep, in which kenny will be the man. There is probably pace issue with both of those guys, but its better having your guy leading than out bodying you.

I would love to see what context these comments were made about bassett too, about him being one of the toughest opponents hes played on to. Its good to remember that players generally dont go around slaging each other

For what its worth, I totally agree.

Rutten get the job on Hall if he is going to base himself in the goal square, when he wonders out to CHF McGregor can take him.
I think one thing has snuck under everyones guard about the crows is they are now one of the few teams with three quality defenders who can play on tall forwards, very few teams can do this. Like port with wakelin, bishop and cornes the fact that three are down there just makes it easier for one of them to peel off of their man to assist the other.(unless you are getting flogged in the midfield of course).
I would be tempted to match bassett against nick? davis, bassett would do enough just to scare him out of the game.

Mad Dog I think every coach in the league should take note of that. It may be predictable to the opposition but it also shows faith in the players in that position that the coach thinks they are good enough.
Most times when coaches try to fiddle with the spine it fails and ends up in a thrashing purely because the players lose faith a lot quicker.

In 2004 in Ruttens 3rd game as a FB he held Barry to 3 goals. He has improved immenesly since than especially this season.

Rutten

than

If Halls up the ground Mcgregor
or in the Goal Square Basset.

Maybe Kenny might get a chance to play forward this week because right now i see it as Rutten Vs. Hall, Basset/Torney Vs. O'Loughlin, Basset/Torney Vs. O'Keefe.

I think you will be surprised how quick Rutten actually is over 20m, I think he is one of the fastest at the club.

Rutten for mine should get the task, physically he matches up with BBB and Bassett will spend the entire time in the hole in front of BBB.
I think we will be able to contain BBB with Rutten, Bassett and Torney all taking turns putting their body on the line.
