Big Bodied Mids - your average man's Defender

No idea from me as I don't see all Carlton games.

Bootsma will be a good player when players are allowed to wear an earpiece listening to coaches instructions.
I'm learning that if you don't understand how to get around the ground when you come into the system, then it's highly unlikely you're going to learn.
i.e. Hampson, Natanui, Daw...........Bootsma
It is for this reason that I strongly advocate playing guys like Scotland in the ressies, more than the seniors. Vocal senior players give invaluable guidance to the junior players and really teach them how to structure up.

I don't think we anticipated having to call up Scotland but injury has forced our hand.

Would have been good to have had Duigan this year also, but not to be.

Nick Holman will fill out nicely too.
I was about to write that I didnt think he was tall enough to qualify in this "big bodied mid" category, but wanted to check how tall he actually was. Blown away to read he is 187.

Mundy was drafted as a KPD, he was obviously able to transition to the midfield though.

That's fair enough but just a heads up, what many players are listed as isn't remotely close to their actual heights.

Cripps and HBF are actually the same height. You heard it here first.

I've long said it may be worth our while to try White out in the centre.

He's not a complete stranger to that role having spent some time as a midfielder prior to joining the club.

The club has spoken glowingly of his running power a number of times but we've never really seen that translate to AFL level, for whatever reason.
Hampson to CHB. :oops::p

No chance of White playing midfield. Doesn't have poise. Megladon posted that White was a midfielder before he grew 17 to 20 centimetres. Shot up like Jake Carlisle and Cripps who had a similar growth spurt. Unlike White, Cripps is still a midfielder in a tall's body.

I'm a huge Andy Mac fan and see him as a clear best 22 option for us going forward as that 3rd defender, but right now it's hard to argue with White getting the nod ahead of him. How long that will be the case for is anybody's guess but right now he's the man for the job.

I don't wish to rag on a player anymore than what I have. However, I'd like to ask what you've seen in him post-op (so last season and thus far this year) that makes you a big fan of his? I understand that it takes time to recover from such a serious injury but in my opinion he has shown nothing, sometimes less, in the chances that he has had since returning to the team that remotely resembles the player that he was pre-injury.

187cm looks about right for Holman. He does though look a little heavier than the 80kgs listed.
Maybe it's just the way he goes about things.

Just starting to get into the swing of things this year Wiki.
Better down low than White and with a few more good games, I'd expect him back in the side.

I certainly hope so. It's been his mental approach (more so his decision making) that has been my biggest source of criticism which was a strength previously. We could certainly use him if he can find his best.

Inside mid with vision & quick hands is what you want. If they're big that's a bonus.
Obviously with Tom Bell we've started off with a big body & are trying to turn him into an inside mid, but in his case he's also a freak athlete

If you look at Port Adelaide's kids.... I would prefer talent over big bodies any day of the week. Besides, whats the point of having a big body when you cant even bump?

I'd consider Ebert and Wines big bodied.
There's never a one size fits all remedy. It's about having the right blend for what you're wanting to achieve.

Who can't bump?

I'd say he's referring to the Jack Viney bump and the tribunal ruling.

I have actually been saying this for the past 3 seasons. Really wish they would try it.

If Warnock holds up his form (I think he is doing OK) and we keep Wood and Casboult around, the club could direct Humphrey to lose some bulk and tell him we are going to play him as an on-baller.

Similar to what Richo did in his last years. Kruez is not as athletic as Richo but he is more in and under, takes contested marks, and could really bring a different dimension to our game.

Always feels like Carlton is a season or two behind the tops sides in mimicking the latest game style - something like this make put us in front for a change.

You want me to send some scornful emails to the club? I'll get JustaBattler on board too. He wants to come back to the dark side I just know it ;)

In all seriousness though, Warnock is locking away the number 1 ruck position all to himself and good on him for doing. But with Kreuzer another year (i think) on his contract may have to re-invent himself just to get out on the park and I dont think he's got the speed on the lead to be an almost permanent forward.

He's got what it takes, just needs to have extra training sessions with Diesel and Kouta over the offseason/during preseason to add that extra bit of class.

Agree, just a bit of class and rack up the ball a bit more.

We already know he can bullock his way through midfielders and leave them withering on the ground. The thought of him doing that physical work we've already seen from him, but as a focused onballer, is quite salivating ;):rainbow:

Its unfortunate that our kids who aren't as mature in stature are showing our "big body" players how its done.

Well, lateral thinking which I enjoy. I'd like MM to experiment a little this season so why not try it? Horrible memories of Fev at full-back one day though
Pagan trying to prove a point to a baby whilst foregoing 4 points we were hardly likely to get anyway. Oh God, Gehrig, Milne, Hayes, Jones, Montagna.....

I swear, if he ever starts looping the ball over the opposition's head in one hand I reckon I'd have to bring a change of pants with me to the footy ;)
