More wickets lost to the reverse sweep in this series than the combined amount I've seen the entire time I've followed Test cricket. Why is it so fashionable suddenly?

Boys have had plenty of practice in the BBL, should have just ramped our way to victory.

Some ones in their ears saying the sweeps the only way to combat spin on these type pitches...how many indian batsmen do our blokes see playing the sweep!
Bring back JL and take the captaincy of Cummins I say!!
Could do a lot worse than getting Mike Hussey in as a batting coach.

Terrible batting from Rohit. Gotta have your defense sorted before you start playing these attacking shots.
And unsurprisingly now he's out. Just really terrible batting

As Hayden said, it's unbelievable that they've obviously gone in with a plan for today but they didn't change and adapt with the circumstances.

It's beginning to look like a hallmark of the Cummins era - sticking with things long after it's obvious it isn't working.

TBF this was the Paine era as well thinking back to the Stokes Test in England as well as the Pant Test in Brisbane.

Australia seem to come up with one plan on the day, and sometimes it works and its great, and when it doesn't well...

That's what usually happens when the tail wags the dog. Players taking ownership yadayada, they don't like coaches actually being too serious, prefer an extra fanboi to tell them how good they are.

And this is the problem, right? Our lead-in was BBL cricket, and a plan to "play the sweep shot, like Haydos did back in 2001."

Well, Haydos practiced for hours and hours on dustbowl practice wickets leading up to that series and perfected that shot in a gameplan that was suited to him personally. It's ok to emulate it, as long as you put in the hard yards beforehand.

Yeah good call, the lead-in was absolute sh!te, not a single practice game even.

My analysis of the second test vs India at Delhi.

After getting smashed in the first test, Australia has a chance to bounce back. They would've somewhat acclimatize after that failed first test and are looking to put pressure on India after winning the toss and batting first.

When will Warner's credits run out.

Warner's failed once again as always in Asian conditions not just India, I wanted him dropped on my last post but unfortunately too much credits in the bank. Now he has an elbow injury that will rule him out for the series and the first two weeks of the IPL.

Australia batted well in the first innings.

Having won the toss they elected to bat first when the conditions are at their best. They got to a good start to 263 with Warner and Khawaja getting to the team to a good start with a fifty run stand. Khawaja looked pretty good as does Handscomb. Cummins also batted well in the first inning bringing the score from 168 to 227 when the team could've been bowled out for less than 200.

India bats very deep.

The Indian batting was once again saved by it's lower order after it's top and middle order mostly failed. They were 7-139 and made it to 262 all out. In the first innings, Handscomb was there to bring us from 7-227 to 263 all out. In the first innings of the first test we were 7-172 only to get bowled out for 177. It was the best opportunity to get a good lead going of at least 100 runs but that Axar and Ashwin partnership saved them and instead India were one run behind. In India's first innings in the first test, they were 7-240 which meant Australia had a chance but they along with Shami batted us out of the game.

Just when you got past Rohit, Pujara and Kohli you now have to deal with Axar and Ashwin.

Australia had a chance to put on a good total but instead collapsed and folded.

Australia at 1-65 had a chance to make India chase a good total of ideally over 250 with the way they're batting unfortunately they all folded for 113. I agree with the intention of sweeping but the execution was off and they kept on missing the ball. As I said on my last post, all that India have to is keep bowling straight and eventually they will miss of easy bowled or LBW and also I did suggest bazballing but what Australia did was a reckless type of bazball as in sweep just for the sake of it rather than rotating the strike to increase the chance of Ashwin and Jadeja bowling bad bowls that can be punished. Head should've attacked more in the first innings imo.

Intent was there but execution was off. Bazballing is a lot more than just blindly slogging to the boundary. I'm sure that's what the Aussies do.

Renshaw is NOT a middle order batsmen.

When Warner was unavailable to play due to concussion and elbow injury, I expected that Renshaw would open the batting but instead it's Head that comes out. Head was pretty good, looking to rotate the strike and showing positive intent not allowing Ashwin and Jadeja to settle down. As mentioned on my last post, I think Renshaw would do better against the new ball when it doesn't turn as much when it becomes easier to bat against the spinners and by the time the ball gets older when it becomes a harder to bat as the ball turns more off the pitch, he would be set. Instead he has to come in against the older ball when the older ball turns more. I hope he opens in the next test.

Should've been opening not in the middle order.

India's spinners can bat better than opposing top orders but our spinners (bar Agar) mostly can't bat.

One of the reasons why India are near unbeatable at home is because not only are their spinners world class bowlers. They can also bat better than touring teams top and middle orders. Our spinners such as Lyon and Murphy are great but both of them are tailenders. Maxwell and Agar are the closest but neither of them are as good bowlers as Lyon and Murphy let alone Ashwin, Jadeja and Axar although I felt Agar should've played ahead of Kuhnemann as he would've provided extra batting depth.

As I said on the last post lack of tour matches I'll say it again.

Cricket Australia should've told the players who were going to be selected for the series to skip the BBL and head over to India about a month before the test series and have at least three practice matches to acclimatize. Australia during the 2016-17 BGT had one tour match and they performed better than now with Smith going god mode in that series. With more time, Australian batsmen can consistently practice on sweeping for hours per day on dustbowls until they rarely miss regardless of the delivery like what Haydos once done. I wouldn't be surprised if it came back to haunt them.

India during that time were really busy with ODI and T20 series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand so if Australia came to India early, they would've been more prepared and even draw if not beat India in one of the first two tests and Marnus, Smith and co would be making potential hundreds while the Indian batsmen are recovering from limited overs mode to test mode. I can guarantee you that we wouldn't be rolled over for 177 and 91 in the first test or put up more than 350 and 250 in the second test if we had those three tour match. Our bowlers also know which line and lengths to bowl and and what type of delivery to bowl. Maybe I'm just being overly optimistic like I've been when writing up preview threads.

Next time we come to India for the BGT series, we need to come a month in advance and have three tour matches before the first test.

My dream Australian XI vs India in India to match India's deep batting.

Note this is not realistic though. Just my fantasy.
  1. Matthew Renshaw
  2. Usman Khawaja
  3. Marnus Labusghane
  4. Steve Smith
  5. Travis Head
  6. Cameron Green or Peter Handscomb
  7. Alex Carey (WK)
  8. Glenn Maxwell
  9. Ashton Agar
  10. Pat Cummins (C)
  11. Nathan Lyon or Todd Murphy
Now if only Agar and Maxwell bowling is world class then we would be very formidable. Maxwell is better than a part timer but not quiet to the level of a specialist spinner as he seems to be lacking the revs, drift, turn and control but it's better than a normal part timer. Agar though just does not look threatening, seems to only bowl straight without turning it much. In summery he tries to be somewhere between Axar and Jadeja but is no where near as good as them. Maxwell is a huge loss with his injury imo but he just cannot seem to shake the white ball tag.

Joe Root played a lone hand recently in India IIRC, making heaps of runs with sweeps and reverse sweeps.

Australia probably looks at that and thinks it’s their best chance, but not everyone is Joe Root obviously

Do people seriously believe this crap?
Cummins does.

The question is: what is the best style of coaching for the future, given how the team has evolved?

"We have been very well schooled in how to play cricket in the right way – in the correct Australian way.

"We understand the importance of always playing to the highest ethical standards.

"And the players need no motivation as I've never played with more motivated cricketers.

"To be better players for Australia, from this solid foundation, we need a new style of coaching and skill set
