Meh, who knows? If Carey holds that catch, maybe Stokes comes out and digs in. Butterfly effect and all that.

Cummins would've taken the stumps scoreline when he inserted England at the start.
For sure you take it.

If we catch Brook on 5, they would've struggled to make 200 IMO.
Need to hopefully bat all day and more now.

Ali probably won't bowl, Anderson getting on and Woods really only quick in 4 over bursts.

We could put them to the sword.

Interesting they mentioned in the commentary that Surrey who play their home games at the Oval usually opt to bowl first and the best batting conditions are the middle days.

2/22 off 6. Professor, would you say Murphy was under bowled? Yes, yes I would Kent.
I wouldn't. The quicks were ever-threatening with the conditions. Murphy came on when things were not working and it was time to mix it up. He got the breakthroughs, job done.

In the second dig I'm sure he'll be utilised a lot more.

I hope that the extra 100+ runs we gave them from the 5 dropped catches (only one would have been considered difficult and a bonus grab) doesn't come back and bite us in the a**.

They were all out for under 300, I'd call that a decent result.
Apparently the average first-innings score at the Oval is 343, while the average second-innings score is 304, the average third-innings score is 238, and the average fourth-innings score is 156.

That would suggest...
1 - 283 is a bit unders (though it looks pretty good for the conditions)
2 - we need at least 400 to build a lead to cover for the poor 4th innings scores.
3 - if we end up in deficit we are royally screwed.

Why do they keep asking for the ball to be checked? They’re missing the bat plenty and the Aussies are barely scoring.

That is an incredibly low average fourth-innings score. Is that a full (10 wickets lost) average or does that include innings where the last team batting is only chasing a small target and therefore only need to score 40 or 50?

That’s the type of figure you expect to see on an Indian pitch that just completely deteriorates into a minefield by the last innings.

For once, a pommy write-up that is actually well-balanced and questioning of the Bazball approach...

Interesting to see if they try it in India later this year too
