Article on his injury.

http://afc.com.au/default.asp?pg=news&spg=display&articleid=311437

Does anyone really think he will ever make it back into the adelaide lineup? By the start of next year we will have 3 ruckman who will all be better than biglands. I never really thought he was that good of a player and thought him to be a terrible ruckman.

Thoughts?

Gee those selectors must be right clowns then ;)

and there was me thinking the prelim against WC turned when he got injured...

2008 is a long time away at the moment.... I'm hopeful for Biglands that he can get back into the side then. The good thing about Biglands is that he is reasonably pacey for such a big guy, and he can slot a few goals. Plus he has the experience, so I suppose we'll see how Maric and Meesen go :thumbsu:

How on earth did this team make it to two prelim finals in a row with such duds playing for us? First Shirley, now Massie and Biglands who all three are consistently in our best 22 but obviously the coach and the selection committee have no idea

I am amazed at the amount of people on here who can't see the positives, only the negatives of most of our players.

Spot on. :thumbsu:

Some people have no idea.

Straight careless on your part, Nikki.

You've missed Reilly, Burton, Bock, Rutten, Mattner, Clarke, Bode, Knights etc, who have all had their selection criticized in recent years.

Have you no shame, woman?? ;) :p

It was the loss of a 2nd ruckman that did us in, not specifically Biglands. Clarke understandably ran out of steam.

Don't forget that the turning point in the last quarter of the 2005 prelim was when we were steaming home and Biglands came on to replace Clarke with 10 minutes to go. WC immediately got the next 3 centre clearances and buried us.

even if biglands is not in your top 2 ruckmen when he recovers is there still an opportunity for him up forward? (I know he has been used there a few times in the past) He is big, reasonably mobile, can take a contested mark and is a reasonable set shot?

There's even a chance that one of our ruckmen this season will be used in a pinch hitting role up forward - Meesen would be the most likely. If one of the ruckmen is able to add that string to his bow then it would make it even harder for Biglands.

Besides, I think we've got better forwards than Biglands if we were to play him as a forward only. I wish him all the best and hope he recovers hassle free, but as MD said, if he can't get back into the side then that means we have progressed. It would be a bad way for his career to end but often when players, particularly ruckmen do a knee at that age it can be their last game.

and you forgot the young one as well! I was just going on this years discussions, not the past ;)

Ansty - Biglands was one of the quickest at the club over 20 metres and his turning ability for a guy of that size was quite remarkable (for those that don't believe me go watch his two freakish goals in the Fremantle final last year) Craig has shown that he is willing to use his talents up forward and I can see an opportunity there, plus his ability/willingness to contact the opposing ruckman at contests is something we don't have in the other ruckmen on our list

Ah, but coming back from a knee that skill would've diminished quite a lot. His leap would've too and he never had that great a leap in the first place.

I'm saying he got selected as there was no better option in the ruck. If Hudson was fit this year i doubt he would have had much of a go besides injury. surely after m + m play games this year they will be better options in the ruck. The prelim turned when we lost him cos clarke had to do too much work, not cos of biglands ability. I guess he could be used as a forward but his kicks not great. I guess we will have to wait and see how our young talls develop. Im also assuming he wont be as good when he comes back due to his injury.

Good luck to Biglands - but if he can't force his way back in - surely that means our side has progressed......:thumbsu:

Spot on if he is a chance of getting back in as a ruckman then that means Maric,Meeson and even Huddo have fallen off the face of the earth

Maybe back as a Forward

Good luck Rhett

No one likes to see a player go down, but Biglands is 29, he will be 30 on his return and if he does make it back we cant be in a very good shape as a footy club. With our other ageing stars would you take back a player who is 30 and coming off a knee? If we end up taking him back 2007 would have been a poor year with Meesen and Maric failing. And as a forward, true he did kick some goals this year, but if we have to rely on him as a forward we are in even more trouble. There is no way he should stand in the way of a Sellar or Tippet. Finally did someone actually say he was a strong mark? The Crows havent had a marking ruckman since Rehn.

This is exactly my point.

The upside to Biggles making a successful return in 2008 is obvious for him personally - but the point to my comment earlier was that the downside of a successful return, by definition, would be......"what happened to Maric and Meesen.?.."

This is a corner we've painted ourselves into unknowingly in terms of signing Biglands up for another 2 years just weeks before he hurt his knee.....which was the right move btw.....but it's interesting how it's turned out.

this is as "Nail. Hammer. Head." as I've read in a while.....:thumbsu:

Dead set right as soon as Biglands got injuried there were suggestions by some people on this board he should retire, what crock of crap, they wanted Massie on the bench or not in the side at all yet he has come along in leaps and bounds over the last 18 mths, thank goodness that same person isnt on the AFC selection committee and is better crossing off the days on his calender until the first bounce in 2007.

So Marty, what do you propose we do with Ivan Maric and John Meesen in 2008? Play them in the SANFL or trade both of them back to a Victorian club as they would be looking at playing AFL?

Rhett Biglands has been a very good player for the AFC but due to his knee injury his time as a ruckman has now passed him by (by round 1 2008 he will be 30, nearly 31). They should have asked him to retire because he will not come straight back into the side and play as a back up ruckman behind Ben Hudson because we need move forward with Maric and Meesen.

It’s called strategically planning for the future because in the next 24 to 36 months will have to turn over Ricciuto, Goodwin, Edwards, McLeod, Torney, Massie, Biglands and maybe Burton and Hudson (depending on how his knee holds up)

Ben Hart was the first played terminated last season; as harsh as it sounds I see no reason why Rhett Biglands was not used in this culling session as well to ease some of the long term pain we will face.
