I am thrilled with this concept.

I am not for Collingwood retiring numbers. Other clubs can do it, but not us. Our legends live on through their numbers (Rhys Shaw kicking that goal in # 22 was a great highlight, I don't want to NOT see Bobby Rose's gurnsey out their, just like any other Pie great) I can understand the reasons behind retiring no. 42 when Darren Millane died, it rocked the club and hit hard. What this new concept does though, is give the chance to be able to use the number ("moving on", "closure", whatever word you want to use), yet still establish some relevance and meaning behind the jumper. It kind of becomes a mini award at Collingwood each year to be our first draft pick. Darrens family willing, I thiink that it's a fantastic idea.

RIP Darren Millane, and heres to Billy Morrison. Welcome to Collingwood.

When a jumper is retired, it is RETIRED. But now coz our prez wants our footy club in the paper again, he gives away the number of the jumper of the bloke that epitimises our club who was cut down in his prime.

Having said that, I'm now used to the idea that tradition and history means very little to the Collingwood hierarchy and that nothing is sacred any more. But I do think that wearing the #42 is an honour that must be earnt.

The fact is that first picks are generally classy types, not the hard workers that would be more suited to the number 42. Given that in the last 5 years Cole is the only draftee even slightly worthy of this honour.

A very upset Collingwood supporter.

Oh come on.

History and tradition? What do you want the club to do, live in the past forever? Those were the mistakes made by the past administrations. I didn't like the idea at first, but it is probably time to move on.

I can't see what the issue is.
Its just a number on a guernsey FFS.
Based on some of the hysterical reply's to this topic we should still be playing at Vic Park.

Great post!

The only things I have against it is that kids can't stick on the number of the player they like straight away.

What if Billy has a great year? He's not uniquely identified!!

Plus, throw the kid the jumper "Here kid, have some expectation!". Doesn't sit well with me.

To be honest, I liked the 38-40 players, 38-40 numbers. If this is working, no-one needs to think about Pants' number.

Give Billy the number 3 jumper and allow him to reinvent it!

If this Billy is really as good as we hope he will be then 25 is the number for him, in the tradition of the greatest Billy of them all.

Get a jumper with #42 on it!!! each year you'll have the gurnsey of our first draft pick! You acknowledge the late great Dareen Millane, and also reconise a new tradition at Collingwood. Brilliant.

The millane family are a joke. What is the problem? Its a number, a number that another player should be given the chance to make famous, there has been great players go through our club and their numbers are still worn, Millanes should be no different.

did u ever c Darren Millane play? he was arguably our greatest & most popular player of that era (in my opinion, definitely!) obviously the club were trying to best honour his memory, although they should have consulted the Millane family first, and had the idea approved. Millanes number holds the most signifigance of any number worn by a Collingwood player, and as such, any player to adourn the number should have earnt the right. No matter what any player may do in the future in the famous 42, it will always be Pants' 42.

This has nothing to do with the way he played. well actually it does, he was a fantastic footballer, and it would be an honour for a young guy to be handed the number 42.

In consultation with the Millane family, that will eventually happen, probably next year. The number needs to be returned and made bigger by allowing a potential champion to wear it for the next ten years, like Tony Shaw did with Bob Rose's number.

Give it to Richie Cole, Jason Cloke, David King, Tarkyn Lockyer or even Billy Morrison, and let them wear it until they retire.
