Bumped Billy Picken?

I always thought the easiest way to describe Billy Picken as a player was to say he was like a big Mick McGuane.

He had immense, freakish talent, could rip the game apart, yet his career was effected by injuries, especially towards the end.

Was a great servant, played in a few GF's too.

And yes, most Collingwood supporters are disappointed we at least didnt rookie his son at the time we were aligned with Williamstown.

Absolute star and a proven big game finals performer. Best position was in defence although could play CHF quite competently as well. Spectacular mark but a pretty poor kick. Scruffy, always played with his socks down and his jumper untucked. Along with Ricky Barham he was my favorite player in my teenage years.

One of the games great characters and a complete motor mouth. Apparently when setting up for a speccy mark he'd shout "here comes Billy".

I saw the end of his career and was a great finals performer and also took Mark of the Year in his first season (1974) and then again in 1976.

Was famous for calling his own name when going for marks, shouting out ....

"Here comes Billy" :D :p

Two out of three ain't bad, Opti, but he was not fantastically skilled. He was, however, a fantastic player.
the old man told me skilled, although he tends to over rate slightly lol

So, excuse my ignorance regarding draftees and players in general before playing afl........

Tell me why Billy's boy was not picked up by us? I watched Billy run around and he was fantastic. We are so keen to get anyone named Cloke and Shaw on our list.

Has he improved out of sight, or did we drop the ball on this one?

supposedly we thought Liam couldn't kick and wasnt skillful or good enough in any area to list F/S or even rookie

Thanks, Opti. So read: We dropped the ball.

Frack that pisses me off. I know we can't get them all right but (again I am sorry but not as knowledgeable as some on here) I just feel as though when it comes to father/son we have never fully taken advantage of that.

well he was only rookied by the dogs, not actually listed

Also iirc the year we overlooked Liam we rookied Wellingham, so its not like we lost out majorly

Although i wouldnt mind having picken running around as out tagger in the B&W tbh

Thanks, seems we probably have broken even at this stage, who knows.

But if I had to chose between wellingham (I hope he wasn't taken too high in the draft) and a son of a club star before either had played league footy, my heart (which is why I don't run the club...thankfully) would chose a club star.

But Wellingham seems to be progressing well.

15 other clubs overlooked him for 3 or 4 years. What people don't really look at is that Picken for a long time was pigeon holed as a small forward, so Dogs have done well to get him playing well as a tagger. It's more a great find for Western Bulldogs than an error for us.

I certainly did not see much in him in the 2 last years of our partnership with Willy.

Wellingham is 2 years younger than Picken let's not forget. When Picken was training with us and being considered I don't think Picken was at all ready to be put on an AFL list, let alone a few years before that.

Billy Picken, played his guts out all day everyday..... not a great kick but could take a great mark, the best finals player i have seen in the seventies........ along with ronnie wearmouth of course, after the grand finals players used to swap jumpers and i remember billy taking his jumper of and he had heavy strapping across his ribs... yeah they were busted but that wouldnt stop billy, great player and some great memories, go pies.:thumbsu:
