I'm no expert on the topic but from what I've heard today the death was more symbolic than hugely significant to the current situation. It sounds like Al-Qaeda does not have a centralised organisational structure, but rather has a number of splinter groups with their own leaders. Doubt they need one person to stand up and 'keep it running'.

This makes absolutely no sense. Then why make Osama bin Laden the scapegoat as you stated above? Why not make Saddam Hussein the scapegoat and go to war directly instead of "making up" a story about WMD? Why have a two-front war going on when all you need is Iraq? Why get loaded down in Afghanistan if bin Laden is only a completely unecessary scapegoat? Why wait a year and a half to invade Iraq with very little international support, when the US could have scapegoated Hussein instead and gone into Iraq directly with the near unanimous international support that was given for the Afghanistan invasion instead? That's nuts.
