In California the death penalty exists, in the form of death by lethal injection. However, a court case in 2006 ruled that if the lethal injection is not administered by a licensed medical professional then it constitutes cruel and unusual punishment. Of course, if a doctor administered a lethal injection he would violate the Hippocratic Oath and be struck off, making it impossible to procure the services of a legal executioner.

Californian courts continue to place criminals on death row with no immediate prospect of the sentence ever being carried out.

Its illegal to carry loaded firearms in Vic

It is still legal to shoot rabbits from the back of horse drawn carriages

Not quite... hunting allows it.

But it is definitely illegal when in a public area or on public land. Which is fair enough. I would hate to become like the US and have people riding trains, in restaurants, driving cars, etc whilst carried a loaded firearm. Recipe for disaster.

In Sweden, prostititution is legal, but it is illegal to engage the services of a prostitute.

I read somewhere that a town in America passed laws prohibiting people to shave or use the telephone while driving. This seems sensible enough, but the laws were passed around 1910! It is somehow hard to imagine a man driving his Model T Ford automobile down the street while attempting to shave with a cut-throat razor; or holding the earpiece of his telephone to his ear while balancing the main part of the phone on the steering wheel and trying to connect to the overworked exchange!

In many juristictions children can be charged with child pornography offences for taking pictures of themselves and sexting or posting them online. Who is the victim???

e.g. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29912729/

TRENTON, N.J. — A 14-year-old New Jersey girl has been accused of child pornography after posting nearly 30 explicit nude pictures of herself on MySpace.com — charges that could force her to register as a sex offender if convicted.

(sorry no pics)

Pretty sure in Aus, it's child pornography if say, you receive naked photos of someone under 16, and THEN re-send them on to anyone else.

I heard that attempted suicide was punishable by hanging in Victoria a while ago.

LOL. But thats what they would want!!!!!

What about it being legal to smoke at 16 (???), but illegal to purchase smokes until you are 18. (not that i care, i think smoking is disgusting)

Also its illegal to tape shows off the TV. How stupid is that, how can that actually be enforced.

It's more correct to say it's not a criminal offence. It's not actually a legal profession, but they don't see the point or the justice in punishing the women who regularly end up in the sex industry as a result of abuse, coercion or drug problems.

I believe the law used to state that it is legal to record a tv show but you can only watch it once, and you cannot loan it to anyone. basically if you record something on VCR back in the day you could only watch it once then have to erase it. I beleive the laws have since been changed.

In Holland, it is legal to purchase marijuana is at "coffee shops". However, importing and large-scale production of the plant is illegal, meaning that the marijuana that the coffee shops themselves purchase is illegal.

The persons who plant it would surely have a license though. Fair enough too in my opinion. If it's going to be legalised, it should be regulated very well, so that the government can tax the industry.

It's not, as far as I know. In order for coffee shops to purchase stock, they must buy it illegally. I'm pretty sure people can grow their own on very small scales, but yeah, no large-scale production, no imports, nothing like that. Seems stupid, but I think Holland want to come across as permissive of it, rather than actively endorsing it.

This is true. Illegal though not punishable. Think of it as travelling on the train while all the inspectors are on strike. What you are doing is illegal, but no one can do shit about it.

Coffeeshops operate on highly sophisticated grow ops, which under Dutch law are illegal, and much of the weed and especially hash is illegally imported aswell. I have no doubt the authorities know about the sources, the shops operate rather transperantly, though it seems that it is a win win situation for the police to turn the other cheek.

I believe there were attempts to legalise but simply ignoring tge existing laws proves less disruptive.

I... Um... A friend knows a bit about this.

In France it was illegal to name a pig Napoleon (I am not sure if the law stands to this day).

This caused a few problems when George Orwell's classic novel "Animal Farm" was published in France, as one of the main characters is a pig named Napoleon. The problem was resolved by re-naming the character Caesar in the French editions of Animal Farm.

Avignon, France: It's illegal for a UFO to land in the city.
Somewhere in California: Cats & Dogs cannot mate without a permit.
Brainerd, Minnesota: Every man must grow a beard.
