In the draft area today I was reading about the “Next Big Thing” a young Aboriginal kid call Clinton Benjamin. He’s already getting attention due to his freakish abilities even though he is not eligible to draft till 06. He’s sound magical, around 195 , runs like the wind, leaps over packs in a single bound , you know the type. I’m talking Black Magic. Am I a racist? I hope not but there seems to be something wonderful about the way most Aboriginals seem to play, and I’m not on my Pat Malone believing that either.
In the Hun the other day, Glen Archer penned an article about the brilliance of Daniel Welles. Reckons he will be better than Matera. In fact, he said if he was reincarnated he’d like to come back with a bit of Aboriginal blood in him, there is just something about their “Black Magic” he wrote. Watching Welles do his Jackie Chan and kicking match winning goals ,its hard to disagree. It must really eat up those Blues supporters, especially since he as he seem’s to carve up Blue Baggers each time he plays them.
At least they have drafted a bit of magic for themselves now with Eddie Betts. A cultish goal sneak. Over at the Hawks, the new kid that they drafted this year Buddy Franklin , he looks like he could be anything, some said the Hawks were nuts not to go for Tambling but they might yet have the last laugh or what about Davey at Melbourne who looks like he could catch lightning if he chased it. He’s made fools of the drafting experts that overlooked him.

They seem to be everywhere, well nearly everywhere, except in the hoops.

Why haven’t we got some players of this sort pushing thru, heaven knows we could do with a little bit of silky smooth performance. I’m all for getting locals but Id love to see a kid like Clinton running around in the Hoops, the problem of course is I don’t envisage us being in position to pick a top5 pick any time soon. Davey has proved there is talent out there that is just waiting for a chance, so maybe its time for us to take a few gambles on Aboriginal Rookies, maybe its time for us to try to develop a bit of Black Cat Magic

Don't read too much into this, but is it really Thompsons style?

Sammy , what do you think is Thompsons style?. To me he has a aquired a taste for skill over his time at the club, no more shovel kicks.
Do you mean he's defensive, surely not as much as Laidley. Id love to have a Wirrapunda type to hit **** coming out of defence and think Thompson wouldnt knock him back either

Hmmm, maybe I generalised too much. By his style I mean I don't think be after another Burns like player who might only get a few touches in the pocket every game. I think Bombers style is good solid contributions from every player every week opposed by maybe some 'black magic' who at times has outrageous skill and can be erratic at others.
Also his draft history has shown the clubs stance is to go after the best available player (certainly with our first couple of picks) whether they be black, white, tall, short, backman, midfielder or forward. If the right player comes along, we'll get him

This would have to be the biggest fallacy in drafting. What does it mean?
Is there a test for best available player? NO There are tests for speed , jumping etc at draft camp, footy nous and ability when playing for state and team all are accumulated to create an "opinion".Every year, every side gets player better than the pick they drafted them with, eg "Oh Tambling with P4, we thought he was P2 or P1" , We got this player with pick25 , we thought he was a first rounder" Why? because all teams have different opinions. Appart from a few that are obvious elite player like Riewoldt,Cooney even if we say the top10 players, after this it becomes tainted by what your teams requirements are. Even last draft Hawthorn took Roughhead before Tambling because they felt they needed talls. If , as I sugested, we chose to use a Rookie pick or two on a Aboriginal player , who could argue that they were not the best available. There was kid that player with and similar to Tambling last year at the U18 champs that I think didnt get picked, Relton Roberts, would have been worth a gamble as a Rookie.

Didn't Ling get picked at about No. 47?

in 99 draft Ling got picked at 38 , Enright at 47. Geelongs current resurgence is a result to bumper crops in 99 and 2001.Although we had no priorority draft picks we have Corey,Chapman,Ling Enright Mooney,Bartel,Kelly,Steve Johnson,Gardnier,Playfair,David Johnson and through FS GAJ
12 players from 2 drafts freakish. Yet two of our first three picks in 99 are no longer at the club.
A more usual result would be like 02 Mackie,Lonergan,Tim Callan(fs) or even 2000 Hunt. Depending on the year the talent might dry up early or be very even where P50 might end up better than P20. It can be a raffle
As I said basically Round 1 picks can be relyed on to come good after that it development, educated guess's and luck.

I see today in the Addy , have signed up a young kid called Rowan Bonson as a top up VFL player. If I remember when I watched the NT U18 game last year he kicked a couple freekish goals that almost had him up there in comparison to Richard Tambling.Screamers and goals with either foot, the article say's, he has been playing in the local GFL and got the attention of GFC and EFC.Step in the right direction I feel, be interesting to see how he goes, shame we wont have any real hold on him if he turns out to be a another missed gun like Davey.

Itll be good to see how he goes, the only thing is though we are just showing him off to other clubs really as we have no rights to pick him come draft day. shouldve hidden him away some day ala the old days.

Rowan Bonson

An appraisal from a couple of years ago, courtesy of Dom.

Rowan Bonson

Details:
Club: Nightcliffe/NT
DOB: 8 Oct 85 Hgt: 183cm Wgt: 70kg
Position: Forward
Natural foot: Right

Honours:
Northern Territory 2003 (picked but didn't play)

Profile:
Earlier in the year I was watching NT playing Gippsland in the TAC Cup. It was the first time I'd seen them for the year so didn't know what to expect. One of the first players to catch my eye was this skinny Aboriginal with a ridiculous rat-tail haircut. He kicked 3.1 and set another goal up without even seeming to get out of 1st gear.

I thought nothing of it at the time, but it seems I was lucky, because it was the only game he played for the Northern Territory this year. He didn't come to the Nationals because his girlfriend didn't want him to come down!

Bonson is from Burunga, a tiny settlement about 100km from Katherine. Apparently he considered Darwin a big city, so any club drafting him would have a lot of work to do. It would be a HUGE gamble given how little football he played at a high level.

The reason I've included him however is both Darren Bewick and Chris Lewis say he is better than Raph Clarke - the best player in the state for his age. That's a huge wrap.

He looks tiny, but has a huge leap for his size, and once he bulked up could play forward. Already in the game I saw he was using his body well to get better position in the marking contest. He has very clean hands, great skills and a stuttering approach to goal, but it works. He could be anything, he could be nothing, we might never hear from him again. But from what I saw he has the raw talent to play at the highest level.

Just about the perfect example of of kid who would be worth a rookie spot. Long shot but you may end up with a kid that is better than most first rounders.
Nana , as I said , the Addy mentions that Essedon had their nose's siffing around him so the secret is out.I hope Tudor uses him well , open up the ground and let him show us something

Phat , was there a picture of this kid in VFL jumper in the Addy recently? Sort of sounds too good to be true. The kid sound like a cross between Davey and Tambling in the writeups. It will be interesting to how he goes in the V's

He was in the addy recently. sticko_64 saw him kick 5 on the weekend against his side but wasn't overly impressed. Apparently another similar guy running around in the magoos looked awesome for a GFL reserves player
