Champion midfielder Simon Black has become the second most successful individual in Brisbane Lions history by winning his third Merrett-Murray Medal tonight.

Black polled 53.5 votes to finish comfortably ahead of second year player Justin Sherman (48.5) and Luke Power (47.5).

Only Michael Voss, with five club champion awards, has won more than the ultra-consistent Black.

Black shared his first Merrett-Murray Medal with Voss in 2001 and won it outright in 2002 – both premiership years.

At 27, the 2002 Brownlow Medallist and 2003 Norm Smith Medallist shows no sign of slowing down.

He averaged 24 possessions per game in a season in which he played all 22 matches and received more tagging treatment and double-teaming than ever before.

Black made 30 more clearances, 100 more loose ball gets and twice as many hard ball gets over the season than any of his teammates. For good measure, he made the most tackles as well.

Not surprisingly, Black made another trip to the dais in front of 850 supporters at the Brisbane Convention Centre to collect the Best Midfielder Award.

Blacky's achievement seems to be overshadowed on this board by everything else.

Well said daniel.

Well done Blacky I guess your achievements have been overlooked because we're too busy fighting fires elsewhere at the moment, but that doesnt lessen your achievement. I don't know where we would be without you this year, probably wouldve been battling out for the Bryce Gibbs cup.
 
Congrats to Simon on his B&F win. Had a great year this season and is a deserving winner. Certainly his terrific season and win has been overshadowed by Vossy's retirement and other issues.

Simon deserves all his success - a great bloke and player who could be a good choice for captain in 2007.

Very graceful moves in his playing which indicates much self-control and discipline, and might explain how he has mostly avoided injuries.

Blacky is really indeed one of our greatest players.

His two goals in quick succession against the Eagles in round 20 was beautiful.

Probably between him, Power and Browny.

Black is a top bloke and excellent to have at our club. He has sublime skills, runs all day, is hard at it, only ever thinks about the team rather than himself (he once said "I'd die for this bunch of blokes..." - take note The Lion Formerly Known As). He was well rewarded this year for his ultra consistent performances.

I remember Black throwing up on the sidelines after pushing himself to the limit against the Bulldogs last year.
 
Blacky, i salute you. Your in the top 2 brisbane players of all-time. You r guna be the next captain. IMO u are still with judd as the best midfieders in the game, u have deserved all u achieved, with plenty of team and individual success coming in the future. Well done Blacky, fantastic year and mark my wors ppl. blacky for bronlow in 07

Top 2 is a tough call, I love Blacky, but Lynch and Merrett must surely be knocking at the door.
