Re: 2nd - 3rd main Ruckman

Most people are saying this guy is terrible, but surely he has some talent. We was a member of the Vic Country side in the National Championships. He is made of the right stuff too, he broke his wrist in Round 3 of 2007 and played through the season with it.

When he was drafted it was mentioned by the experts that Dawson was a long term project. Lets not forget the guy is only 20 years old, and most ruckman don't come on until there 22-23.

Because he is 8ft tall....hell if me or you were as tall as him im sure we would be playing VFL aswell...So he is tall and solid, but he is terrible at football...sounds like Blake, but Blake is 4 times as good as Simpson, and 8 times the tap ruckman aswell.
We will see though, im happy to give Spudley Simpson a couple of years and be proven wrong by him.

I'm not sure i agree with anything you've said about Simpson.

He looks to move quite well for his size, and was certainly in no way more uncoordinated than Blake. His Ruckwork and Positioning will improve.

Mumford was the fat guy in the VFL before he turned out to be a winner. I won't be labeling anyone a spud until they've been given their fair crack.

But as you said, he still has a couple of years to prove his doubters wrong.

Re: 2nd - 3rd main Ruckman

Blake is now a season, tough afl ruckman, and yes he's very durable.
We are lucky to have him, he may not be outstanding, all he has to do is neutralize the oppositions ruckman.
And he's becoming very good at doing that, just wish he'd tap the ball away from the oposition goal istead of to it at times.

Re: 2nd - 3rd main Ruckman

And key forwards while we're at it.
I work with a TAC U18 team and we have a key forward/ruck, very mobile , 198.5 cm tall, 100kg, can and does kick 70m goals, and doesn't get kudos due to a number of in juries. I know Geelong and 10 other teams have interviewed him so I'm hoping we get him at pick 17-would be a beauty, but will surely go before then.

Re: 2nd - 3rd main Ruckman

Regarding Dawson Simpson. I read somewhere he's done a bit of Karate (2nd dan or some such). If so, then there is coordination and discipline in that 206cm frame!

Sounds like Griffiths

Been down in Tasmania recently and was reading about some 2m tall bloke Milne who scored 14+ in the beep test.

Re: 2nd - 3rd main Ruckman

Dawson Simpson was an absolute spud in his 1st year of VFL footy. He has improved significantly to the point where I think he could make it at AFL. A bit like McIntosh in that regard.

Re: 2nd - 3rd main Ruckman

Just to let you know it was mentioned in today's SUN that West has signed a 1 year contract.

If he's 195 and 90kg, I wouldn't complain!!

And key forwards while we're at it.

Emma Quayle (and she's generally pretty knowledgeable on potential draftees) says this draft has next to no ruckmen and KPP are also weak.

I think we might see a ruck or tall guy or two plucked from the state leagues somewhere.

Tassie's talls in draft

JAMES BRESNEHAN
October 08, 2009 09:09am
TASMANIA'S ruckmen, Joe Groenewegen, Daniel Archer and Cameron Milne, have stepped into contention for the AFL Draft.
Groenewegen went to the AFL Draft Camp in Canberra last week and was interviewed by seven clubs while Archer and Milne were put through their paces on the AFL screening day in Melbourne last Saturday.
Archer posted an impressive time of 2.98 seconds for the 20m sprint, which was faster than the times set by Tasmania's best draft hopes -- Ryan Harwood, Marcus Davies and Jesse Crichton -- at the draft camp.

Milne excelled in the beep test, posting a result of 14.3, which was the best of the talls at the screening day and would have placed him just outside the top 10 at the draft camp.

"There's not a lot of tall players in the draft this year and there's not a lot of access to draft picks for the other 16 clubs next year because Gold Coast has nine of the top 15. So clubs are looking extra-close at tall players. They are coming into contention more than normal," Probert said.
