Well, I recently got a blank CD to put some comedy skits I had made with my friends on my comp. Anyway, I had to convert the files to CD Quality and of course, the files become bigger. I was putting them on CD, and It all fit. But it was a 700MB CD and altogether my files were 738 MB. How does is fit if the limit is 700MB?

You sure you weren't using a 750 MB CD?

Also how did you measure the 738? was that what it was on your hard disk? If so the way in which data is stored on hard disks, which to put it basically can use a lot more space than the actual amount of data, can often be misleading.

Its because it doesnt burn as data but as time, im pretty sure thats how it works :)

im not 100 percent sure but im pretty sure it converts the MP3's to audio file, and it records as time and thats why you can only fit 18 to 20 songs.

700meg cd = 80minute CD

A song that is 5:37 long is no different to a movie that is 5, 263 KB big.

Time = Data.

Of course, but I was just trying to illustrate the point that time is not a different medium of data storage to megabytes.

I really should have qualified that a 5:37 mp3 at 128kbps is 5, 263 KB. :cool:

im not 100% sure but they transfer the file to AUDIO, so it plays on your CD player. The cd player does not read it like a MP3, its different, as it is burn as an audio sound wave. Im pretty sure that time does not = data.

Just because the song is 3 minutes long does not mean it will take 3meg. Wrong.

Most songs are ripped at 128kbits or higher and are usually 4meg + each, and the songs are usually around 3minutes. It just depends, although its true that the longer the song, the higher the meg, but i do not think that there is a mp3 which takes more time than it does in size. For example a 4minute song which is 3meg, its usually the other way around.

True. CD players, in general, do not play mp3s, so you have to burn your files as .wav.

I was not saying "Time = Data" in a quantitative sense, but in a qualitative sense. The point I was making is that it is ultimately irrelevant how long the audio piece when you are considering how much room on the CD it will take up. You only need to consider the size of the files in megabytes. Time = Data in the sense that a temporal file (audio/video) takes up space in the same way that an atemporal file (image/text) does so.

Ah ok. But then it still doesn't answer your question of how you could fit 738mb of files onto a 700mb CD! ;)
