If anything, I think you're understating it. If we didn't land Judd the best we could hope for right now is AFL administration ala Melbourne. Worst case... Fitzroy.
Or paid relocation to Tasmania to become the Southern Blues.

Marchbank just has to nominate Carlton and we are home.

North is who I'm concerned about if they lose Wells they'll have a lot of money to throw at good youngsters.
Yeah but that's the thing isn't it - haven't heard any particular driving reason for Marchbank to come to us, just back to Vic. So if another club offers him a better deal and can satisfy GWS with trade, there's nothing really tying him to us. He'd likely get a regular spot with us, Essendon, Richmond, Melbourne etc when fit.

The most noticeable link in common with those teams is the rock solid professional admin they had at the time of their success and a couple with some AFL concessions, but still well run clubs.

Not home grounds? The teams at the top all have a home ground advantage. Swans get 12 at the SCG. A ground that is unique and they share with no other club. Cats and Hawks can both regroup in Geelong or Tas. 2 or 3 game advantage per year. Top 4 rather than bottom of the 8.
The Melbourne clubs sharing the MCG and Etihad are behind from the start. Occasionally the AFL throw them a bone. Collingwood playing each week on the MCG in 2010 and even the Dogs playing Etihad (double edged sword) each week at the start of this year.

We had no idea what it took to win games pre-Judd, let alone have success. I recall interviews with players who were dispirited and felt we were close to having a mass exodus. Kennedy was not developing well.

We had a dearth of leaders. I think it is very optimistic to think success would have taken just an extra year. Judd brought more than just playing talent. He brought professional standards, he brought hope, he allowed Murphy and Gibbs more time, he shouldered the media focus and he worked with the coaches to communicate the messages.

We can look at the fact we didn't have ultimate success with Judd but some foundations were set. The players stood up against those who were not toeing the line and started to get hungry. So many intangibles with Judd.

I remember a great story in the pre-season that Judd joined. After a training session the players had a function at Raheen (Dick Pratts mansion). Naturally the food was laid on - cakes, danishes, ice-cream etc.

I think it was Marc Murphy who said he went up to the table and was filling his plate with junk when he looked over and saw Chris Judd ignoring the sweets and filling his plate with fruit.

Murphy said he sheepishly shoveled the cakes back off his plate and filled it with fruit. if it was good enough for Juddy it was good enough for him !

It was this complete 24/7 professionalism and attention to detail that Judd brought to Carlton.

I heard it was in the canteen and it was hot chips.

Bit of a left field proposal in advance. Jack Hutchins. Formerly of the Gold Coast Suns and then was delisted and this year was named in the VFL Team of the Year at Full-Back. Would he be worth putting on a rookie role? I know that he grew up a blues fan. Probably won't happen, but would it be worth it hypothetically?

Thoughts?

and you'd happily sit on the side of "all is level playing field", should success for us component was current.
It'd make it easier to stomach but no, no I wouldn't. I'm consistent with this across all sports. I'm a basketball guy but my interest in the NBA is fast dwindling with these "super teams".

Sport is meant to be a competition, not contrived nonsense like GWS. It makes a mockery of the clubs like the Dogs who've done it the right way.

This Marchbank to Essendon stuff is nonsense. I don't know which footy show it was but one of them on Fox Footy said that if Marchbank wanted to get to Carlton that he would do well to claim he'd be happy to go to Essendon. GWS would work out a deal with Carlton before allowing him to leave for nothing.

That has, of course, since been translated as Marchbank to Essendon.

And how does that work when all the good players nominate the top clubs & academies are in place? Like it or not, GWS & free agency is a problem.

Free agency is definitely a problem. Compensation should be scrapped, and the 4 preliminary finalists should be banned from gaining FA players.

Basketball guy myself and my stance actually stems from the NBA. Owners locked the players out under the guise of equalisation and preventing super teams - driven by the Lakers TRADING for Chris Paul - i.e. giving up assets, and not necessarily 'buying' him, or having an agreement with players to 'team up'.

Now, fast forward to today, and the amount of money these 'small market' teams, who led the lockout, are now throwing at players is laughable. Mis-management of your organisations should not be rewarded. Teams are accountable for their own planning and actions.

"Super teams" are player driven. Teams offer a platform for this to be possible; and when I say teams, I mean teams / organisations that are well-run, have plans in place on / off field and are successful, thus making them an attraction for players to come.

Kevin Durant went to the Warriors because the organisation is A grade and are successful. They BUILT their team through the draft, and managed it as such that they could afford to 1) attract KD and fit him under the cap and 2) offer opportunity for success.

The Warriors got bloody lucky that they got to re-sign Steph Curry under the old CBA.

I heard it was in the canteen and it was hot chips.

I heard it was at Preston Market and it was jam donuts.

And Juddy's fruit plate was only one factor, together with Mebby giving Murph a glare and Thy mumbling 'ffs' under his breath.

lucky JOM isn't a FA, it would be the bottom 4 Suns to top 4 Hawks with the Suns getting squat and the Hawks giving up some of their salary cap, the definition of Equalisation.:drunk:
