On playing ability maybe.

However if a 27 year old Scully is on a $1M per year they may prefer to let him go and keep Kennedy and Whitfield instead.

I would.

If Scully is on anywhere near $1m until 2021 then there's no way I want him, no matter how much of a discount we get on Kennedy.

PS: I don't know what Scully is on and I don't think he is on $1m a year but just in case he is...

Scully won't be coming. Contracted to 2021, needs to agree to trade (remember Bradshaw and Rischitelli), loves Sydney, re-signed for a lot cheaper, wants to stay the course for a premiership. Anyway, we haven't been able to get first 22 players from GWS, why would we now, Scully played all but 1 game. We need to look at their 23-30 players or those like Marchbank Pickett who can't get on the park. I'd be interested in a package from Kennedy, Smith and Whitfield definitely. If you add a salary dump, so be it. We could use all three. We want quality, but we still need quantity too. They all fit our age demographic also. Put Pick 3 on the table SOS and see what you can get. Not having a 2nd hurts our bargaining power at the trade table. I'd love a Rayner or Cerra, but I'd much rather a Kennedy AND Smith and/or Whitfield.

Fair enough.

I was attempting to use a hypothetical example to show that a club will want to get rid of players whose contracts exceed their playing worth.

And in some cases they may prefer to move on a an established player on big $ to keep 2 younger guys on lesser $.

There must be a reason we are chasing him...

Yeah, I took it too literal. Apologies.

SOS is a devious bastard.

Ask for Scully - settle for Kennedy etc etc

1 - He's not 27 until May next year.

2 - They are in their premiership window, you don't get rid of your best players when there are other options

Kennedy, Smith, Whitfield and Griffen. They'd look to offload each of those before they'd resort to offloading Scully.
You also need to consider the state of their list after this season.

I think once all is said and done, they're looking at a regular rotation of 33 players at best, and then they're relying on kids to step up over the next 3 years to supplant Mumford, Deledio, Shaw, Ward, Davis, etc.

The academy pool is running a little dry, and they've got 2 or 3 guys who genuinely want out, so that's back down to 30 at best, and suddenly that much vaunted depth is a little thin in terms of fuelling a top 4 challenge.

Would you still sacrifice three players from lower-to-middle band in terms of age profile to fuel this continual need to grow the squad?

Scully the salary dump if I understand correctly, but yeah - sounds like that's our ideal outcome. I love it. In fact, even if it becomes pick 7 or 8 for only Kennedy and Scully, it is a good outcome for us.

27 years old next year, but I'd be happy to get Scully if he is the salary dump as long as we're not giving too much to get him in.
Non drinker, great work ethic, elite fitness and a great role model for our young players.

Look I'd love for us to get Scully to Carlton, imo we need to have a skilled, experienced mid who isn't 30+ and with Scully's gut running ability would be a great acquisition for us.

But I still don't see it happening.

It's obviously on the cards, and it might be more palatable to them than losing Whitfield.

Carlton speaking to Stkilda to trade Pick 3 for Pick 7&8

That would only happen if Kelly nominates Carlton though, obviously.
Our only other way for us to bring in another 1st rounder (or two) atm is to trade Gibbs.
Let's hope that Kelly nominates us early on so that we can get that deal done with the Saints.
In a perfect world we could do that deal and keep Gibbs as well.
Even so, it's hard to imagine any deals for Kennedy, Smith, Lang or whoever without getting picks for Gibbs.
I think he's gone.
With a bit of luck * played themselves out of the equation today against the Swans :)
