CARLTON has all its eggs in the basket of a brilliant midfield in 2011, and Thursday night's season-opener against Richmond was another illustration.
''Our plan for the game was: 'If our midfield beats their midfield, we win the game','' said Mitch Robinson, the Tasmanian who made a surprise appearance at the first bounce and who played arguably his best game for the Blues.
The idea is that men have to step up to help captain Chris Judd, club champion in each of his three years with the Blues. On Thursday, the assistance came from the likes of Marc Murphy (best-afield with 31 disposals), Robinson (29 disposals, 15 contested balls), Bryce Gibbs (29), Kade Simpson (28) and newcomer Ed Curnow (24). They overwhelmed Richmond with a 49-26 clearance count for all but the third quarter, when the Tigers momentarily stole the lead, before Judd (25 disposals, 10 clearances) took control when the game went on the line.
