I have always looked at our selections as simply as who is the best player (who will fit our team mentality, culture, structure, age group etc etc) .vs. who is the best player.

Simply Hayes may be the "better" player however our culture is based so much on the team that we'd always pick the "team-fit" over the better individually skilled player. If this is right or wrong is not part of this thread... What I will say is I will never ever regret Jude over Lenny. You can sit and look at what could have been all day and all night, at the end of the day Jude was right for our club at the right time and we managed a premiership. Watch Jude pre-match, on the field and post match. He bleeds red & white. Wouldn't have anyone else.

well fosdike, fitzgerald and bolton filled specific needs in our team. it's not as though we stuffed our pick up in taking bolton. he's had a very, very good career with us and either way both teams would be (and should be) very happy how both hayes and bolton have turned out. in saying that though, i wouldn't swap bolton for anyone. he's as tough as they come.

Lenny might have been an even better player had he been indoctrinated into Swans culture. A quirk of the draft that we didn't get him, and drafting for specific needs I suppose. Lenny IS a great player, no one would argue that, we'll never know if we got it right because Fitzy broke down and went on to become a TV goose. But as it stands, I wouldn't swap Jude, one of the best team players we have had, second to Kelly in my time, probably leaving out a few, but right now can't think of any

Splitting hairs for mind. Both players had midfields built around them as required players once they hit their straps. But would Lenny have been amazing for Sydney? Absolutely.

Lenny comes to Sydney. Trips on a bicycle outside the SCG before he's even played his first game. Smashes his head into Kelly's thigh who falls into Maxfield. Stuey lands awkwardly breaking his wrist. Barry comes over to help and is hit by a bus. The bus, carrying the rest of the team careers into the cheer squad. The rest of the players are either injured or killed. The coach and assistant coach are killed. None of the players play again. The cheer squad are slaughtered. Black arm bands are worn all year. Swans play their reserves team all year. They sink to a new low, lose half their fan base and go bankrupt.

That's why I never engage in 'what might have beens'
