I have a gut feeling that McKernan will be a trade coup for us. He will be the ideal athletic 2nd ruck who plays forward. Belly will be number 1 and Giles as his depth. Combine all this with Daniher developing into a superstar and I think we can afford to have the dream KPD set up of Hooker + Carlisle and Hurley playing as the beastiest 3rd tall defender in the game.

Watching some of the run, skills and contest work of our youngsters against Melbourne I now envisage a forward line with

HF: Laverde Ambrose Langford
FF Edwards Danhiher McKernan

.... trust me it will be ace.

Fletch will be coming in to his prime too

hmmmmm.

With Mitch Brown on our list there will be no need to play Carlisle in defence. I'd also be surprised if Ambrose holds on that long.

On a more serious note, the team that contains Fantasia, Dalgleish, Gleeson and, in all likelihood, Laverde and Langford selected on merit each week will be the one that does the real damage.

It's the addition of speed (including that break away power from stoppages), genuine class with ball in hand and some mid and small sized players who know their way around a forward line that will make the real difference (because they are qualities that are not in abundance in the senior players for whom we are current managing the list to give a shot at success).

I can't even pick how we'll go this year. 2017? Reminds me of the fans survey where there was a question like "will your club win a flag in the next 5 years" and well over half of supporters said yes.

If you exclude the guys who are currently 28-30+, and some guys who we've seen enough of to have tarnished reputations, I look at the core of the team as:

Dalgleish Hooker (M. Brown?)
Hibberd Hurley Gleeson

Bellcho Heppell Myers
??? Laverde Colyer

Langford Carlisle Merrett, Z.
Fantasia Daniher ???

Last 4 players and at least the midfield ??? from a group like: Watson, Goddard, Baguley, Stanton, Hocking, Melksham, Cooney, J. Merrett, Edwards, Kav, Ashby and Dempsey.

Not sure whether you want to throw in a tagger (Hocking will be around in any event). There is a question mark over the third tall/second ruck. It obviously putting the cart well before the horse to include Brown.

The few holes that team has are easy enough to overcome (if we don't already have the players we need on the main, rookie and even extended rookie list) and present a very different problem to the imbalance, lack of running power and average skill that has plagued the current team. You can add any of those I've listed who are not in the starting 18 without really changing the balance of the side.

If you're next best players are big slow inside midfielders and/or are a bit average by foot it doesn't matter (because it's really only Heppell and Colyer that aren't excellent by foot - which gets the ratio around about what Hawthorn currently has).

You've got small defenders/half backs who are equally suited to playing on a wing without robbing the midfield of mobility. You've got genuine small forwards who can rotate onto the ball. The team is a lot more flexible and better suited to playing footy that way it is being played (as opposed to cluttering the midfield to defend without being able to score, scoring without being able to defend and/or clogging up space around the ball to compete in close only to spend significant time looking like witches hats around the ball against teams with powerful clearance units).

All we've got now is the hard part, developing these kids so that they can assume the mantle sooner rather than later. I'm very confident that we are on to something that can even match it with the juggernauts up north. I'll be as interested in the VFL this year as I will be in the AFL.

Heppell 4 Brownlow

If Ambrose is our CHF in 2 years time, we're in trouble.

It's not what you think as a CHF. All three are 190cm running machines. Ambrose is a beast and the other two a silky. Edwards deep will also add a lot of depth to the 190cm silky running machine. Daniher and McKernan will be the power forwards who we kick long to, Ambrose is not playing that role.

However, there is a post above that mentions Fantasia. He showed a lot yesterday too. Perhaps he plays forward and one of Laverde and Langford play midfield.

Club should just tell him to work his butt off in the VFL and if he does we offer him a rookie contract come seasons end.
There is 17 other clubs in the land, and I reckon we aren't the only one who have been impressed by him.

In the next couple of years we should go after an Ollie Wines/Angus Brayshaw build/sized inside midfielder, I feel like that's the one base we haven't covered as yet as far as the young brigade goes.

*I'm excluding NOB because I still don't think he's actually a midfielder, despite his good VFL play

Myers and Heppell will work inside and Zaka on the fringes of that. I agree we need one more, but one with breakaway speed.

Club probably feels at least two more years of watson, Goddard, Howlett and Hocking though. This is the year to go that way first round to give him time to develop. Tall back and ruck next year.

The best thing about that (possible) side you named BrunoV is the key posts.

FB: Hurley
CHB: Hurley
C: Heppell
CHF: Carlisle
FF: Daniher

Those smalls are easily filled.

Agree with this. We've gone after a number of FA in recent years, when push comes to shove at the end of the era (of Cooney, BJ, Chappy, Gwilt etc) that war chest should be used on a big fish. Something we haven't managed to do in recent memory (a young player to Bomberland)

I meant through the draft, but it could easily be trade or FA as well. I just look at that type of player (Vlaustin, Wines, Cripps, Dunstan, Brayshaw, Petracca) and think we've got basically none of that type of player under the age of about 23.

Basically all out young developing crop are outside runners and flankers, which isn't a bad thing because they typically take a while to fill out more vs the inside bangers who come straight in and perform.

We should have gone after Mitch Hallahan in the offseason.

I was a massive advocate of him and hope he does well. I'm meaning a big fish (think like a Luke Parker - the biggest of big fish) and throw a massive deal at said player.

Kavanagh, Hams, Aylett not enough?

We have more pressing needs than true mids in list management terms.

Signing Ollie Wines in the next few years would be the best thing that ever happened. Unfortunately how often do we see this calibre of player traded these days?

Jake Carlisle + top 3 pick out

(Giving up something of value for something of value - only if player x was replaceable by someone else)
