Business & Finance Border closed down :(

The people who lost their jobs are Australian though.

Yea obviously, but Radical Roo is crying foul about Australian companies being bought down by international competitors, when it's not actually the case in this instance, as Border's isn't an Australian company, and most of the products they were selling (books, CDs, magazines, etc) were imported anyway.

My this is wrong man, think of our children. What's wrong with paying 10 bucks on books. Books are knowledge, why don't you flogs smoke 1 less packet of ciggies or drink one less slab of beer per week. You get all the money you need for extra 10 to 20 bucks. If you are going to buy overseas, then why don't you all move overseas. If something that exists in Aus on the shop floor it y buy it over the internet. Aus money must stay in oz man.

LOL. An American company selling imported books. Yep, let's keep our money in Oz, man.

Welcome to 2011.

Everything is made in China.

Manufacturing jobs in western countries are dead. They cost too much.

You're just feeling the knock on effect now.

No jobs = no money = no purchasing power = retail death.

Feel the voodoo economics and keep voting the government that keeps screwing Aussie kids out of a future.

It's alrite the days of <1000 buck tax free is ending soon. DJ, My Dickie, Harv are all ganging up to lobby the gov to slap tax on online buys.

They've got no chance of stemming the flow with just imposing the 10% GST. Overseas items are often considerably cheaper and would still be even with freight and a 10% tax. The problem is the manufacturers price their goods at a level they think the particular market is used to and will bear, rather than a consistent margin above cost. We've been gouged in Australia for many years, and it isn't that the retail margins are huge, it's the price from the manufacturer that's the problem, and that extra money goes overseas too!

For any Melbournians interested in picking over the last remains of Border's inventory, the Melbourne Showgrounds is currently hosting the wake. Nothing over $5 and now 10 books for $30.

Don't expect to pick up any bestsellers; the quantity and quality of inventory they had left tells you something about why they folded. You can pick up the teams guide to the Cricket World Cup for 50c....... the 2007 Cricket World Cup.

you're not going to change the threshold on GST for imports
its fiscally irresponsible for the government to do that. the time it takes to enforce it would be way too much compared to any gains from the increased tax revenue. also the big companies need to start being more flexible with pricing. with the AUD so high right now, you're stupid not to use it to your advantage. i expect to pay more over here for goods, but some of the mark ups are just ridiculous. you can blame it on retailers and manufacturers alike
i've recently purchased something for 400AUD (which includes shipping) from the states which was retailing here for 600AUD. i' would have been happy to pay 50-100 more if i got good service and warranty, but for the price difference, its simply not worth it. as for books. the ebooks market is to blame. Kindles and other readers have exploded in popularity and when you can buy the ebooks for a fraction of the price of a real copy, most people will go with the cheaper option

Reminds me of the Virgin store at Spencer street where you can pick up a copy of the 2008 player prospectus for the bargain price of $10

Yeah, and the people who's small scale independent bookstores went under as Borders' book supermarkets came bulldozing their way into every Australian city were Australian too.

**** Borders.

Zing

I started shopping at Borders from 2004 onwards but quickly stopped once their unique range of products stopped being stocked (as mentioned earlier in this thread). For books I went online, for CD's/DVD's JB hifi.

Good point although technically this time there's no other Australians gaining jobs out of these ones losing theirs.

FWIW I've never bought anything from Borders. Too expensive!

Soon as the government relaxes their copyright laws around Australian Publishing. The local publishers will be the next to go. Can't say I will miss them, been ripping us off for years.
