Akermanis, Weller return

Exciting speedster Jason Akermanis is back in the AAPT Brisbane Lions line-up after being sidelined last week with a back-related hamstring problem.

The 26-year-old will add pace and experience against one of the Lions’ great rivals, Port Adelaide, at the Gabba on Saturday night.

Akermanis and former rookie list player Luke Weller were the additions to the side that lost to Essendon by eight points last weekend, with premiership stars Justin Leppitsch and Chris Scott the omissions through injury.

Akermanis, who has played 178 games and booted 207 goals, trained strongly at the Gabba last night to signal his availability for the big clash.

The news was not so good on Akermanis’ fellow member of the ‘Fab Four’ Nigel Lappin, who is still being troubled by a badly corked thigh. Lappin was unable to join in the main training session last night and misses his second straight game.

The story was the same for dynamic back pocket player Chris Johnson, who misses his fourth game with hamstring problems.

Weller made his debut against West Coast in Round 12 and held down centre-half-forward with aplomb in Round 13 against Richmond. He was omitted after his third straight senior game the following week, and has been a strong contributor at reserves level in the ensuing fortnight.

Port lost Peter Burgoyne to suspension and dropped first year player Steven Salopek, bringing in strong run-with players Stuart Cochrane and Kane Cornes.

Salopek, Brendon Lade and untried South Adelaide midfielder Chris Hall.

The Lions side is:

B: Ash McGrath, Mal Michael, Martin Pike

HB: Jason Akermanis, Darryl White, Marcus Ashcroft

C: Brad Scott, Michael Voss, Tim Notting

HF: Aaron Shattock, Jonathan Brown, Luke Power

F: Craig McRae, Alastair Lynch, Daniel Bradshaw

R: Jamie Charman, Simon Black, Shaun Hart

I/C: Blake Caracella, Robbie Copeland, Clark Keating, Luke Weller

Emerg: Jared Brennan, Jason Gram, Shane Morrison

In: Jason Akermanis, Luke Weller

Out: Justin Leppitsch (shoulder), Chris Scott (quad)

The Power side is:

B Matthew Bishop, Darryl Wakelin, Brett Montgomery

HB: Gavin Wanganeen, Stephen Paxman, Jared Poulton

C: Roger James, Josh Carr, Jarrad Schofield

HF: Chad Cornes, Warren Tredrea, Che ****atoo-Collins

F: Byron Pickett, Shaun Burgoyne, Matthew Primus

R: Dean Brogan, Nick Stevens, Stuart Cochrane

I/C: Stuart Dew, Kane Cornes, Brent Guerra, Domenic Cassisi

Emerg: Chris Hall, Brendon Lade, Steven Salopek

In: Stuart Cochrane, Kane Cornes

Out: Steven Salopek (omitted), Peter Burgoyne (suspended)

Lappin and Leppitsch both out. These two have always been our nemeses. I think that's the correct plural of nemesis.
Anyway, there can be no doubt that their omissions leave more of a hole than ours. Although Burgoyne can be covered, the loss of Leppitsch means our big forwards have to be covered by lesser lights. And Lappin has always been a good player against us. A lot of people, myself inluded, feel if he hadn't been injured against us in r22, 2002 that the Lions would have won that game.

Agreed. Somehow I dont think Akermanis will be at full strength - and I dont think he'll play off the HF flank as listed. I'd say Roo will probably end up tagging him if he starts on the ground, I'd rather start Roach off the bench seeing as he's underdone.

Aka will be at full strength. He was unstoppable before he got injured again in the game against Hawthorn. He'll start on the ground and I would not be suprised to see him start off on the flank or up forward. At the moment, I see him starting on the wing. But I would like him starting on the back flank to give us the drive out of the backline - something we have been lacking since Johnno got injured.

Take no notice to that team. There is no way White will start CHB. Bradshaw or Michael will.

For the backline, Michael will take Tredrea, Bradshaw will take Chad Cornes, McGrath should take Burgoyne, Ashcroft will most likely take ****atoo Collins. McGrath or Ashcroft could be switched around and Pike will take Pickett.

The midfield Shaun Hart will take Stevens and we'll leave the other midfield matchups up to Port. Wherever they line up.

Big ask for this Weller kid then if he doesnt play.

Not really, 21, been on the rookie list for 3 years, got the promotion through the long term injury of Anthony Corrie. Should have been promoted about round 3 or 4. In reserves was caining up forward and down back - mostly down at CHB for the last 3 years - bar last year when he had OP and missed some of the season. In his debut game played 3 and a half quarters, half up forward, half down back.

Still in the absense of Brown, played the hardest position on the ground and was instrumental in our win against Richmond. Was superb, also played some gametime at CHB on Ottens. Was close to our best player that night.

Got limited game time against Fremantle as he wasn't needed. He's going to be a star based on what he's shown and he's ready for any position on the ground, whether it's FB, CHB, FF, CHF.

He's a bloke I rate and will be important to us in the next few seasons.
