When are we going to win the flag ?

I'm really fed up with all the talk and how are young guys are really exciting.........it all means nothing if we don't have that breakthrough year and bring the flag to the Whitten oval.

What are people's thoughts on which year will finally be the year of the dog ?

Your enthusiasm is to be commended..........but I have my doubts. I think we may need a decent forward line first.

Sorry I seem to have misplaced my crystal ball. But seriously folks I think it's too early in the season to make any wild predictions one way or the other. However I would like to think it would be within the next year or two to give some of the older players to experience the biggest game of all and win it. Have I covered my bases well enough?????

Not this year as I think we will be happy with gaining a couple of positions on 2002
2004 our aim should be top 6 and then 2005 we should be aim for the flag.

To win the flag we need to find a key forward capable of kicking 60 goals a season and some bigger bodied midfielders/defenders that can put other teams midfielders under physical pressure.

I've been saying for about 2 years that 2004 would be our best shot given the balance of our list. I see no reason to chance that view.

However if we were to go all the way this year it would be reminiscent of the Essendon team of 1993.

I agree on the need for key forwards. Nathan Brown would be the only forward we have who would have opposition defences really concerned and who could win a game of his own boot. We lack strong reliable avenues to goal, if Brown is held or has a bad day is there anyone else up there you would have confidence in to fill the gap?

Pray for Wiggins to come good and fast.

Ive never been happy with the way we have delivered into the forward line, or with the way the forward line has seemed to operate as 6 individuals instead of a solid unit.

We could do with more talent up forward (who couldnt) , but I reckon we will get better milage out of addressing delivery and teamwork. With Wallet's 'pinpoint delivery scheme' the ball is always held too long giving defenders time to fill holes, man up or whatever, plus we have little guys running all over the place dragging their opponent into space the big guys should be leading to, etc, etc...

Midifleders who hold onto the ball on a regular basis put themselves and the forward line under pressure, and the forwards get confused about when to lead.

What we need (in general) is for the little guys to crumb to the bigger guys, and leave some useful space for the big guys to run into, and we need the midfield to kick quicker and longer into this space in front of the big guys.

So basically what you want is a 97/98 style of play?

If this is what you're getting at, i agree 100% Crumbing little guys, fast moving midfield capable of scoring, Wiggins as a focal point all adds up to...

I believe 2004 will be the year of the dogs!!!! The young brigade with the likes of gilbee, murphy, birss, etc will have had another season under the belts, another preseason, and time to adapt to the new game plan.

2003 will be an exciting and enjoyable year as these guys develop, but 2004 is when they will really shine!!!

Call me a negative nelly but one reason I don't think we can go all the way this year is that Brisbane and a couple of other sides have sides that are far more developed and talented then ours.
We are building a good side that hopefully will be competing for a premiership in the next 2-3 years, but I can't see it happening this year. I expect and would be happy with making the finals and winning one final this season, then building up from there

I posted this early last year. Jimmy Edmond who i speak to occasionally told me that the Dogs are aiming for 2003 to cement their place as a geniune contender and 2004 to make the Grand Final. I personally believe they are probably a year behind taking into considering the upheaval of last year, when you take into account our shocking start (i reckon the Grant neck saga had a lot to do with that).
2005 PREMIERS for me.
