I UNDERSTAND HE GETS THE BALL 30 TIMES BUT HE TURNS IT OVER 15 OUT OF 30 AND I HAVE HAD A GUT FULL.
HE NEVER GETS DRAGGED AND GETS AWAY WITH PATHETIC
SHOTS AT GOAL FROM 30 OUT DEAD IN FRONT AND MISSES.
NOW I DID THE SAME WITH MARK MERENDA HOPING WE WOULD TRADE HIM FOR YEARS WE KEPT HIM TILL HE WAS WORTH NOTHING.
I WAS HOPING WE WOULD OFF LOAD JOEL THIS SEASON
BUT AGAIN WE WILL SIT THROUGH JOEL'S GAMES
AND GET FRUSTRATED AND ANGRY AND 5 YEARS TIME WE WILL OFF LOAD HIM FOR NOTHING.
I SAY TRADE ASAP AND GET SOME QUALITY.

I once remember him as a player who loved the physical side of the game, But since the shoulders went on him he has gone backwards as a player.
He skill level is high, but i think he tries to do the fancy things and that is when he stuffs up. He comes across as lazy sometimes. A player that needs a reality check.
He reminds me Mark Waugh. Looks great then goes out next ball.

Before you get to angry lets just say that getting angry and frustrated from the response of fellow Richmonf fans on this board will get you nowhere. Caps Lock is the equivalent to shouting and there is no need to shout as we all are friends here.

Shout all you like on the main board !

Regarding the context of what you were saying I am sure almost everyone here shares similair frustration with Joel and that topic has been covered in great detail before. So it is no surprise when someone new comes on with a thread that has been flogged in the past ( i know you could not have known this ) that you would get almost no replies.

Interestingly Joel caught pinged for charging on the weekend but because the game was played in Timbuktu noone would have seen it.

personally i consider joel Bowden to the least of our problems..he's a skilled ball winner.

I believe the problem at richmond is having way too little help for Campbo [who should be a wingman anyway] trying to get the ball in the widest part of the ground.

although I think we may be helped here with the emergence of Coughlan, Krak'r, Zantuck and Rodan....the re-appearance of Hilton (and soon Dragga) and the recruiting of Blumfield and Johnson.

I am a North Melbourne supporter and yeah i love watching other teams play...cant get enough of it, and obviously that means i watch the Richmond Football club play whenever they are on Tele.

I keep a close eye on the likes of Richo, Ottens, Gaspar, Zantuck, BOWDEN !! etc...
Now all of the above are good / very good players when they are in full flight........and when they are cold, they are really cold!!

But it came to my attention that Richmond supporters love to hate Joel Bowden and how he plays the game, Which is pretty strange especially when you have a guy who gets the pill 25-30 times a game and say around 5-6 marks per game.
Id take that anyday from someone like Shannon Grant every game........... I mean there are alot more worse players going around in the competition, who probabaly wont even get to joels amount of games he has played.
The only thing id like to see is him being played in a good steady position week in week out, not out of position like frawley has been doing for so long.......he could end up like Adam Simpson )pretty similar) and he could even improve that good style left foot kick he has.
Something to think about anyway...all he needs is a bit of confidence...especially out of the tigers supporters and im sure you will see a much improved Joel Bowden in years to come

cheers for that shark.however i think it has more to do with joel,s "cute"football he plays.for a bloke who has so much talent he does not impose himself in a game as consistant as he should.he,s been around now long enough to be up there with the simpsons etc but he seems to just "stroll" along.
this year is time for joel to step up if not then i would serious look at a trade.

Maybe Joel should be used more as a permanent forward. I think that he has had enough time in the midfield to prove himself. Which I believe he hasn't.

No one doubts his ability. He would be a valuable player to any side, but it's been too long since he has played consistant football.

I would like to see him settle in the one position and be more accountable.

Good commentary, especially with the Grant and Simpson comparisons.

Firstly, Bowden probably is the 5 - 6th best player on our list at the moment and I don't think any of us deny his ability. It is more his penchant for playing the cute football that really annoys us. Also, for someone who is 188cm and 90+ kgs, he does seem to spend a lot of time bravely running around the edges of the pack looking for a handball receive.

Also, if Grant or Simpson got the ball 20 - 25 times a game, they could be relied upon to deliver it with purpose on the majority of times. Bowden, on the other hand, is more likely to spray it anywhere.

Ultimately, if Bowden played the game with the application and intensity of Duncan Kellaway, he would be one of the best players in the competition. But while he appears to go about his game in a lackadaisical manner, we will continue to berate him.

I agree with the general gist of comments in this thread. Bowden I feel is lucky to still be at the club this season - I agree with the original post which said it would've been the smart move to trade him at the end of last season while other clubs were under the impression that he was worth something.

He's one of the softest players going around - there are the Bowden specials of "putting one arm in instead of whole body on one-on-one contest" or "falling down instead of fighting for 50/50 ball" that have become his trademark.

He's a vastly overrated player who I have little faith will pull up his socks and improve himself as a player this season.

Very Lazy player i think, I like the analogy of him and Mark Waugh.

The thing that is missing with Bowden is that he needs to be a game breaker and really he gets enough of the ball to have a bigger impact than he does and he needs to kick a hell of alot more goals than he does. Bowden can kick a ball a long way and this ability needs to be utalized alot more, I would rather have him in the forward line than the back line, I believe he is wasted in the back line, he should be up forward and kicking goals, then we will all be happy with him, he's a goal kicker.

Note: If Bowden kicked 45 goals this year and we got into the finals we would all be saying Joel is finally reaching his potential, I kid you not. What a difference a few goals make, hey. He's playing out of position.
