On 25 November 2006, Collingwood's national recruiting manager Derek Hine read out the name of a young West Australian with the club's fourth pick in the AFL Draft. On Tuesday at the Lexus Centre that player, Brad ********, spoke to CTV about moving to the other side of the country to play for Collingwood.

********, a skinny but electrifying 18-year-old from East Fremantle who was taken with the 44th overall selection, described the draft process, his first gruelling AFL pre-season, and the benefits of having mum and dad move over to be with him at his new home.

"I wasn't eating right at first when I came over, now mum's cooking is good, so it's going alright", ******** told CTV.

"I've got my mum and dad over here now, we've got a house, got my car, so it's going alright."

While the move was challenging at first, ******** was quick to point out that a number of his new teammates have provided tremendous support and made the relocation that much easier, while it hasn't taken long to see which players set the example on the track.

"Leon Davis, Shannon Cox and Chris Egan, they've been really good to me, and Lucuria... yeah Licca he's really good, I look at him as an idol. Him and Bucks (Nathan Buckley), Ryan Lonie, Heath Shaw."

********, who stands at 181-centimetres and now weighs 74 kilograms after arriving at the club weighing just 68 kilograms, admits the training was very similar to moving away from home in that it was "pretty hard" at first, but gradually he has become more comfortable on the track and the coaching and conditioning staff have allowed him to complete a greater proportion of each session.

"It (training) was pretty hard at first when I first came over. First day I think we had a 2km time trial, and I went alright. I'm getting into it, doing a lot of the drills."

His efforts on the track this pre-season culminated in a standout two-goal performance in the club's first intra-club practice match last Friday. After overcoming some early jitters, ******** performed impressively among the mature-bodied veterans of league football in action.

"It was pretty hard early, I couldn't get a kick, kept thinking I've got to get into the right spots, and I went alright after that."

As for that fateful time in any young footballer's life - draft day - ******** said he knew Collingwood had some interest in him and a phone call from Derek Hine the night before made sure he was ready, but there were no guarantees, so to hear his name called out when it was meant he was heading to the club he wanted to play for - Collingwood.

"I talked to Juddy (Head Scout Noel Judkins) and Decker (Derek Hine) at the draft camp in Canberra and they seemed pretty keen on drafting me, but they didn't tell me, and the day before the draft Decker rang me up and said you've got a chance, I didn't really get my hopes up, I was hoping to come to Collingwood.

"I woke up at six o'clock in the morning to watch it over in WA, the top 20 went and I thought I've got no chance with all the top names coming out, and then (pick) 44, so that was alright. Yeah, I was really excited."

Re: Brad **********

Practically his whole family now live in Melbourne. I have a good feeling about this kid ...once he bulks up, I reckon he's a star of the future and he's very exciting.

They're not exactly going to say that he is not fitting in and that the place is full of red necks and the weather sucks and he hates it and wants to play for the eagles and and and

Are they???
No, but they are not going to write up a big article about him if he is like that.

Are they???

I saw the interview on CTV. He seems genuine. And he insist that Collingwood was the club of his choice. The parents living in Melbourne thing is a huge bonus.

"Handy D1ck bursts through whilst showing great ball skills under pressure."

And if he played basket ball? .....

"Quick D1ck dribbles before shooting long."

The golf player??...

"D1ck finds hole-in-one .... twice!"

The Jockey?? ...

"Hard riding D1ck comes through again."

The Skiier?? ....

"Slippery D1ck slides into first place."
