On the 3rd of April 2003, a group of men in Perth are sitting at a table having a meeting. The result of the meeting will ultimately cost the Eagles a Preliminary Final appearance (and possibly a Grand Final) in 2003.

Q - Who are the men & what do they decide?

3rd of April hmmmmm let me see..............
Well we played Hawthorn and lost by 2 points on the 6th.

My guess is....the Eagles match commitee and they decide to play Ben Cousins even if he is injured. Causing him to do more damage? Am I right?

Is it anything to do with the tribunal and appeal of Ben Cousins suspension? I can't see how this cost us the win though.

Match commitee yes, but not for Cuz.

Answer:

FB: Carroll
CHB: Jakovich
CHF: Gaspar
FF: Wilson

This spine was deemed so superior, that they never even bothered to pick any other KPP even as backup. Willo got dragged before half-time, Carroll was at his brilliant best  and Rawlings led Jako on a merry dance that involved turning faster than the QE2.

In the end despite Fletcher, Judd, Cousins, Gardiner, Embley, Kerr, Wirrpunda & Jones all playing good games on the same day (doesn't happen that often), we still got done by 2 points by a Hawthorn team that played crap for most of the day.

Another KPP to either fill the vast acreage in the Hawthorn forward line (15 uncontested marks in their 50) or to provide a target up forward would easily have taken care of the 2 point differential between the sides and we would have ended up 4th with a double chance, home final and still have bragging rights over Freo.

didn't.

Exactly. Interesting, but unless they also then decided that Gardie, Embers, Fletch, Chicky & Kerr would all be injured at the same time late in the season just as we were starting to tire, it certainly didn't cost us a PF spot. :)

Exactly - Should have but didn't. Biggest selection blunder under Wooshas reign IMO.

How did losing that game cost us a PF ?

We weren't good enough to play in a PF this year, the outcome of that game (or how about those 2 draws ??) would have only improve our position cosmetically.

Not much use to play in a PF, if you don't win it and play in a Grand Final anyway, just ask Port.

Well we would have been on 56 points with a better % than Sydney, so that's 4th spot and an automatic home SF against either Sydney or Essendon (assuming we lose the QF to Port Adelaide @ Football Park).

1 Port Adelaide
2 Collingwood
3 Brisbane Lions
4 West Coast
5 Sydney
6 Fremantle
7 Adelaide
8 Essendon

EF Sydney v Essendon @ Stadium Australia
EF Fremantle v Adelaide @ Subiaco
QF Collingwood v Brisbane @ MCG
QF Port Adelaide v West Coast @ Football Park

SF Brisbane v Fremantle or Adelaide @ GABBA
SF West Coast v Sydney or Essendon @ Subiaco

PF Port Adelaide v Brisbane @ Football Park
PF Collingwood v West Coast @ MCG

I'm assuming Brisbane & the Eagles would win at home.

I'm not saying we were good enough, because we weren't. Just highlighting a selection error which ultimately influenced the finals race.
