Player Watch Brayden Maynard

Ben Johnson was an appalling kick in his early days. I was very surprised by the reliability and penetration of his kicking during the second half of his career. He is with Jobe Watson in being one of the few players who actually become better kicks during their careers. For most, wha they start with is what they finish with. Maynard is a technically good kick and so doesn't bear comparison with Johnson in his early days. He is a totally different build. He is not as fast or elusive. He has the same guts.
My thiking is that he will be a good player, but he will not be Ben Johnson revisited.

I reckon he should be given Greenwood's mid/forward role. He's bigger, quicker and a better kick. He's doesn't have the instincts of a defender IMO, he's a see ball get ball type player and I think he should be used in a role that allows him to do that. Greenwood is okay but expendable.

He doesn't have the brains to be a defender I agree. He could be a handy mid and we should try him out. But Greenwood stays for now. He could have a crack at crisps or Blair's midfield spot though.

He seemed to be thrown into the role at the end and got a bit of the ball, I was actually quite impressed with his effort in there seeing as he hasn't been there since his junior days. Wouldn't be a bad idea to keep him in the middle but unfortunately our list has hardly any small defenders on it for some stupid reason, so we can't afford to have him in the midfield right now.

Most players don't have the perfectionist streak required to work those bad habits out of their kicking - old habits die very hard with kicking. Stewie Leowe was another who managed a pretty amazing turnaround late in his career.

Where did Maynard play his junior footy?

We have lacked a quality small defender for years and we haven't recruited or traded to fix the problem. We have all these medium types who were always questionable if they would work out. Not one of them has.

In his draft year he started in defence and then pushed up in to the midfield (quite successfully too I might add) when Brayshaw got injured. Ended up winning the Dragons B&F from memory.

Buddy Franklin is another one. Has come along way from the early days. Kicked 2-11 and 2 ootf one day.

I can't see why Greenwood should definitely stay, he's average at best.

I want to see him have a good run at the defensive forward spot before I write him off like you have. Looks to me like he could be more than useful there. He looks average in the midfield but possibly much better as role playing forward. Need to see him play there a bit more before making a call.

Wins more ball, tackles harder, better mark and better set shot on goal than Blair or Mayne. We should have planned to use him there in the first place rather than offering Myne an obscene contract to play in the VFL.

He was from De La Salle. That's where he gets his hardness from.

He's got a touch of the Paul Seedsmans about him. So muh promise. Delivers every 10 games and does nothing again.

*I'd be switching him to a half forward/midfield role beginning this week.

I'd love to see him around the stoppages smashing into blokes.

I'd like to see him freed up from an opponent and see him allowed to hunt the ball and man.

I'd like to see him having shots on goal from 60m.

Going forward he and de Goey could provide us some real bite in terms of winning centre square clearances and give the forward line a good deal of aggression and strength in a game plan built around winning contested ball and creating spillages inside f50.

Alas I doubt Buckley has the imagination for it.

*Varcoe to go back and man up on one of a number of small quick Essendon forwards.
