I don't see how any running type player should ever return just the 1 tackle per game. Don't understand how that happens without it being an effort\desire thing. We have a gameplan of numbers at the ball.. we aim to out tackle teams but we consistently don't. An issue that seems to have slipped under the radar a bit with all the focus on our ball use/movement. If we were say 5th for tackling rather than 11th.. I reckon we would be 5 and 4 or better. Fixing the tackling is easier than ball use and movement.

You have to remember they are stingy when it comes to counting the tackle stat.

Its measured the same for all players and teams. Did you see Geelong and the Dogs?... Cats won it with tackling..against the best tackling team. 130 odd of them. Dangerfield had16!...you know it is an effort thing with the playing group because Geelong were widely criticized for being contact averse... Then they come out the next week and do 130 of them shows its something in the players mindsets. It was the same for us in the Swans game.
Our lack of tackling pressure is really letting us down this year Mikey. We're 11th in the stat. As I said earlier.. it should be something we are getting an edge on teams with.. that we're not is poor a a big reason we are where we are. Maynard is quick and a bull... He's got no excuses .. he has to tackle more!

Poor 1st quarter, but picked it up from there. He is a much better kick than Marley, and if you watch the replay from the second quarter onwards you will see why.if he can eliminate his brain fades, and be in the middle to forward will be more effective for us in the long run

Loved his desperation in the third (I think) where he put on a great smother. Yeah he makes mistakes, but more often than not he makes up for it.

Mistakes stand out more when they're made in the D50.

Maynard has plenty of upside and has definitely improved this season. Hopefully see him spend some more time up the ground soon as well.

Sounds like you have a personal vendetta against the kid. Each to their own :thumbsu:
Not at all mate. He tries his guts out I will acknowledge but his clangers and lack of accountability are just so very costly. I'd be happy to be proven wrong in the years to come but I just don't understand why Scharenberg isn't deemed a better option.

No more costly than anyone else's clangers or accountability. It's only more noticeable because he has one in the defensive 50. Turnovers in the middle of the ground are the more costly part. The accountability will come with experience. I don't think swapping Maynard for Shaz is a like for like swap. They play two different styles of defence.

If he's still the whipping boy after 60 games I'll happily eat my words.

i like the kid, strong as an oxe and can kick.

persist with him and he will pay off.

we cant have a team of good guys who do everything correct 100%

we all loved heath shaw and he was still having brain farts after 10 years playing for us .

I've just finished watching the replay (I didnt catch the game yesterday), and I kept seeing Maynard getting involved. Again and again. Invisible he aint! His involvements are not always to great effect, but increasingly he is influencing games. I dont understand the calls to drop him to the VFL. He is a big, strong, courageous kid, with a mean boot on him, who doesn't hold back. Isn't this exactly what we want in our developing youngsters? I'm wondering if his mistakes, and their consequences, are blinding people to his positive attributes. Maynard is here to stay, and the no 37 is fast becoming my favourite young player.

Edit: and I forgot to mention - he kicks goals!

I think a lot of people saw that howler in the first and had him pinned.

But yeah, I agree with you, I reckon he had a cracking game yesterday
