I've wondered for years why the Brazilians always play under their "nicknames" like Ronaldo who I think is Luis Nazario de Lima and Roberto Carlos Al Takiri.

Wouldn't it be better for Ronaldo to call himself "Luis Nazario"? What is with their names over there?

It's just apart of their culture.

The Givenname Familyname model that we use is not always common around the world.

In Portugal and Spain most surnames are double-barrelled ones. The mothers surname and the fathers surname are combined.

So Roberto Carlos is actually Roberto Carlos da Silva. To put his surname on his shirt it should be Carlos-da Silva.

Ronaldo would actually have to have Nazario-de Lima on his shirt. Nazario is probably his mothers surname and de Lima his fathers. So he goes by his first name instead.

Also many of the surnames are very common and there would be a huge number of Gonzalez's play for spain and Silva's play for Brazil and Portugal.

Dida and Roberto Carlos for example would just be some of hundreds of guys named Silva to have played for Brazil.

Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima

Just in the current squad -

Gilberto Aperecido da Silva (Gilberto Silva)
Carlos Luciano da Silva (Mineiro)
Anderson Luis da Silva (Luisao)
Roberto Carlos da Silva (Roberto Carlos)
Nelson de Jesus Silva (Dida)

plus the guys with Silva as one of their surnames.

Gilberto da Silva Meo (Gilberto)
Jose Roberto da Silva Junior (Ze Roberto)
Lucimar da Silva Ferreira (Lucio)

Could have 8 Silvas in a squad of 23.

Wouldn't you end up with ridiculously long surnames after a few generations though?

Paul Brown married Sandy Black and have a child, Andrew Brown-Black.

He grows up and marries Peta Red-White, and they have a daughter, Jennifer Brown-Black-Red-White.

She marries Diego Blue-Green-Yellow-Pink, and they have twins, Matty and Patty Brown-Black-Red-White-Blue-Green-Yellow-Pink.

And so on and so forth...

How do the stop the surnames becoming massive (is there an ettiquette to which bits drop off and which bits are retained?)

But what about that guy that scored their second goal - Fred  What sort of Brazilian name is Fred?? His marketing department needs an overhul

The 4 surname thing does happen in parts of Spain.

In Portugal (and Brazil) Paul Brown and Sandy Black would have a son Andrew Black-Brown (mother-father). In Spain the same kid would be Andrew Brown-Black (father-mother).

In Portugal Andrew Brown Black and Peta Red White would both pass down their fathers' names. Their daughter would be Peta White Black. Peta would pass the name Black down to her children.

If Black is a very common surname, but White is rare ... Peta might call herself Peta White. Ayrton Senna da Silva did this. Silva being common.

Just short for Frederico.

If another Fred comes along the second guy would have his name changed. Probably become Fredinho (little Fred).

The current Ronaldo was a Ronaldinho (little Ronaldo).

Ronaldinho was originally a Ronaldo.

The existence of another Ronaldinho meant that he was named Ronaldinho Gaucho (Ronaldinho from Rio Grande).

When Ronaldo retired, Ronaldinho got promoted to Ronaldo, and Ronaldinho Gaucho got promoted to Ronaldinho :D

Middlesborough fans will remember Juninho (Juninho Paulista - Juninho from Sao Paulo). The current Brazil squad has Juninho Perambucano (Juninho from Perambucano). When the first one retires, the second will probably become simply Juninho.

What a name Fred (even if it is short for something else. I think its Fredderico??)

Love Ronaldinhos first name Gaucho thats a ripping name. Juninho is another great name, why cant our players have great names like these blokes

i couldn't stop laughing whenever they called "Fred" last night... surely you could come up with a better name...

and when i went to bed with the radio on the news guy read out that fred had scored the 2nd goal and i was laughing again... i mean "Fred" ? come on...

i dont think fred is even apart of his name like not even fredecio or watever i remember hearing one day on sbs i think that he had such a long name that he couldnt shorten that people just started calling him fred and it stuck

Ronaldo de Assis Moreira is Ronaldinho's real name and as someone said earlier ronaldinho means little ronaldo apparently used by teamates to distinguish between ronaldo and ronaldinho

Kaka is called Kaka because it was a name that his little brother called him when he was little because he couldn't pronounce his real name and it stuck.

yeah thats correct his real name is Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite and his lil brother could not pronounce ricardo i can sort of see how he got kaka out of it though it was caca but changed to kaka say ricardo in a baby voice and you can see its more realistic than you'd think...well i think so anyway lol:p

Kaka is such an unfortunate nickname

Frederico Chaves Guedes is the real name of Fred, BTW.

I reckon Fred's a great name. Brazil also had a player called Mozart play for them a few years back didn't they?

Yeah. Mozart got his nickname because he had a big head of blonde hair that almost looked like one of those old wigs.

Dunga was the best one. Dunga was nick-named after Dopey (as in Snow White and the seven dwarves).

Socrates was another good one.
