Hey Sainters,

Just wanted to know whether Brendan Goddard is under contract for next year. Seems like he might be worth us hunting for if he isn't, the idea on our board is pick 19 and houlihan would do just nicely.

Thoughts?

That wouldn't happen.

Goddard will stay at the saints.

I'm not sure where his contract is at but he might have 1 year left. I cant remember whether he signed a 2 year or 3 year deal after his initial 2 year deal. Even, if he was out of contract I don't think he would want to leave as this ywar he has just established himself as a player. He was probably more vulnerable last year when there were a few doubts on him.

Goddard is a pick #1 with three years of match conditioning and three preseasons under his belt. Still has 10 + years as an elite of the AFL.

You would need a pick #1 plus another first round pick and a second or third round pick.

You can't afford him.

What could Carlton offer any top footballer except years of pain and promises of paper bags that they never pay?

Goddard certainly is not worth the number 1 pick in this years draft. Agree he probably isnt worth 19 and Holihan, but thats going too far. He has been serviceable, but not spectacular. Give me some statistics to prove he is worth even the number 1 pick. Doesn't look like a matchwinner yet. Your idea of pick 1, plus another first round pick, plus a second or third round pick is one of the single most laughable ideas I have ever heard anyone, let alone a mod, ever post. What could we offer him? The chance to be a part of a midfield in his boyhood team consisting of Murphy, Walker, Simpson, (soon to be) Gibbs and him. In four or five years time, when we have switched places, you will see what I mean.

Don't kid yourself. Goddard won't be leaving. He's already part of a midfield including Ball, Dal Santo, Hayes, Harvey and Montagna.

Didnt say he was. But if he is out of contract it ceertainly doesnt stop us from trying to entice him, and that was all I was asking. Yeah, I would expect Goddard to stay at St Kilda for sure, why wouldnt he?

If you believe that - then there is no point in chasing him - because just pick #1 won't get you on the bargaining table.

Had a pretty good year this year, and use the ball really well, but plays without an opponent and tends to get easy kicks. We already have enough of those types without getting another one. Much happier picking up Simmo at 45 in the same draft, a young player who runs hard, breaks lines, hits the ball hard and can actually use it well (something in small commodities in our club) who we might not have got under different circumstances. Will be a leader in the shorter term rather than the longer term.

From a neutral point of view i would say Goddard is worth anywhere between pick 1 an pick 3 , probably the later in this years draft. Having said that i don't think the saints would be looking to trade him and if they were it would not be draft picks they are after considering they have just sacked GT to persue a premiership.

Take a chill pill dude. Does it look like I'm trolling? All I asked was whether or not he was out of contract that all- you dont need to make stupid remarks like that. I suggest you take your head out of your ar$e next time.

YES! Of course you are trolling!!! Weak effort too.

Goddard wont be going anywhere...he is a GUN.
I say well done to the Sainters for sticking by him when all and sundry bagged him. His 2006 has been first class.

Would love him at Pies but acknowledge that he would be in the top 5 or so down at Morrabin!

How about you pack your crap picks and players and move off this board? You're plainly trolling - how many brendon goddard threads started by carlton supporters do we have? Everytime his contract is up for grabs or something happens, eg Grant Thomas... people like you come streaming in looking for him... THIS IS NOT A FISH MARKET! And he is NOT FOR SALE!

Read my question nuff-nuff, I was merely inquiring as to whether or not he was out of contract, that is all. Believe it or not, I am not a part of the recruiting department at Carlton, it was merely to assist with a discussion on our board. You need to understand what a troll is before you can accuse me of one.

He is out of contract.
Hasn't signed yet as IMO they are waiting on Harvey to decide his playing furture so the club knows what their salary cap is before making him an offer.
Given the year he has had they MAY find it difficult given that MANY other clubs, including Carlton could probably offer him more. Just an opinion.

For what its worth I think he will stay at the saints.

Let me get this.. you were here to assist US.

I might as well go on the blues board and start posting about taking nick stevens for pick #52?

Harvey's isn't much and half doesn't count, Carlton could offer more no doubt whether he actually gets paid is another matter

You really aint very quick there, are ya mate?

Why would I come here to assist you??? And again- ??? and ???. Look closely- I follow CARLTON. I came onto the board to get a simple question answered, not to have morons like you attack me

As for mentioning that he might be worth hunting, well by jeez, what a relevation that is! Thats what clubs DO at the end of the year- they go after quality stock at other clubs, that's what St Kilda did to us at the end of 2000 and thats what we might do at the end of this year.

As for going onto our board about Stevens, or Simpson, or Bentick or whoever- one of your brethern has already done so, and I for one, don't give a fat rat's clacker.

To answer the original question, there is little chance of Goddard going to Carlton. Why?

1. Generally, the most important thing to an AFL player is a premiership. I cannot forsee a time, at the moment, when Carlton will win another premiership. They are clearly not "on the rise" just yet, but I would entertain an argument that that is about to happen.
2. Few players changes clubs, and much fewer good, young players change clubs. Goddard will probably finish in the top 5 in the B&F, and the better the player, the more likelihood of that player not changing clubs.
3. Normally once an player enters an AFL club old childhood loyalties fly out the window. Goddard is not homesick, and a move to Carlton wouldn't solve this problem even if he was.
4. There is very little Carlton could offer St Kilda in a trade. St Kilda wouldn't accept any draft pick for Goddard, even #1, because it sets St Kilda's progression back four years in one spot on their list. Of Carlton's current list, St Kilda would probably accept Murphy for Goddard, and that's about it. Waite gets injured too much, and others simply are not of the same standard as Goddard.

Answered seriously enough? Now get off our page.
