Pretty much confirms that he was a part of Collingwood's future plans until he went MIA. I hope he hasn't burned bridges with the club. Sounds like he might have another crack at the AFL if he can get his head straight, and I'd love for the Pies to give him another lifeline.

I wish the fellow well and I'd be happy to see him back if he can get on top of things.

It sounds like he dissappeared several times without informing the club. It can be a big problem these days with drug testing and the like.

Several unscheduled trips?!! Surely after the first one he would have been told he needed to let the club know.

Whilst I am glad to hear that Abbott is getting his life back together I think there is no chance of him returning to Collingwood. He was given all the support possible and yet still made the decision to return to WA on multiple occasions without informing the club. It appears likely that he may have been one of the players responsible for the club being fined by ASADA. This behaviour is not indicative of a player who has the necessary dedication to play AFL. That is no criticism of him as a person and I hope he has a good career in the WAFL. Given what happened at Collingwood it is unlikely another AFL club would take the chance on him other than maybe West Coast or Freo. Long odds of that happening though as these clubs already have deep lists with more talent than he can offer.

I have certainly assumed that he cost the club a fine from ASADA. I did use tentative language to convey that though. If we assume that the article is accurate about the secret trips back to WA the rest is pretty straightforward. The club could have kept Abbott on the rookie list to try and work through these issues. The fact that they did not is a pretty strong indication that he is gone for good.

You assumed he was the one who cost the club a fine, you assumed he was given the neccessary support, you assume that Collingwood wouldn't be willing to take another chance on him if he gets in the right head space, and you assume he wouldn't be willing to come back to Collingwood if they were to offer him that opportunity.

You may not be far off the mark, but given that none of us are aware of the full circumstances surrounding Abbotts disappearance this year, I'm keeping an open mind.

Surely a certain amount of logical assumption is acceptable in a discussion forum? We wouldn't have much to talk about otherwise. As I said, I wish Abbott well but I doubt anyone will be talking about him as a potential recruit this time next year.

Freo is his best chance.

Would require Ross being convinced of his commitment and great form at Claremont.
2 big qualifications there.

I would be happy for him. Doubt it will happen though. His best bet is to find an interesting job or study, play footy on the weekend and enjoy a beer or three after the game. The love of a good woman wouldn't go astray either.

Perhaps without Keeffe and Thomas taking up two spots it might be worth risking Abbott....but with them, its implausible. We have spent all our charity tickets
