I guess it depends on what he's being offered elsewhere or if he is looking at other offers but from the sounds of it he is only dealing with St Kilda.

550k per year is about on the mark given his recent form but he could no doubt get more if he shopped himself around.

I'd like to think that BJ wouldn't be so easily manipulated, but it looks like it may have happened.

Here's hoping that if he is actually going, and is going to GWS, that they take him via their uncontracted player selection, rather than Free Agency. That way we should net better picks, and if we manage to snag a player such as Chaplin through FA, we won't miss out on compensation.

But pretty much everyone knows that already.

Look like his slimy manager has convinced BJ that he should move on according to several media outlets, you heard it here first on July 24.
How sure are we that it's GWS? You'd think it would be them because I don't think the difference in money from Freo would be enough to get him over there, and it's probably not a coincidence that the decision to go to a rebuilding team has come after we look like we might be going down a similar path.

Someone from Freo posted on the rumours board Goddard thread that he has heard from a couple of places that it is almost done and dusted that he is going to Freo.

If that were to happen and they get Ross Lyon, Zac Dawson and then Brendon Goddard, without giving us anything in return whatsoever, then I think it's fair to say it will be WAR.

Anyone that's any good and comes out of contract at Freo (especially anyone from Vic) in the forseeable future, we will have to go after with all the spare cash that losing Goddard (and then Kosi, Hayes, Milne, Roo and so on) will free up in our salary cap. There hopefully won't be anyone that is any good and interests us that won't be getting a substantial offer from us when they come out of contract at Freo, if they pinch Goddard.

BTW, Hutchy said on Footy Classified tonight that we haven't made BJ an offer at all yet. Would be extraordinary if true and he seemed pretty emphatic.

oh well, firsyt round draft pick for us? we had better get that!

Sorry to ruin your mail Brian, but it won't be Goddard leaving the Saints. Currently having issues with another midfielder and his contract.

Could both be going? I know Goddard leaving means we can offer Montagna more money but does that mean we want to give it to him? Going to have guys like Curren, Ledger, Newnes pushing for midfield spots next year so maybe Watters sees Joey as replaceable and it would open up a ton of cap space.

Just throwing that out there.

Similar stature to our man.

Joey is much shorter than Goddard, so it must be Winmar, or Dunnel, or ..... oh you mean held in similar regard. :D

Seriously though, we'd cope with one leaving, but there could be more than one targeted, and if the playing group see it as the end of the road there could be an exodus. We could easily be sick of playing the kids this time next year, and be forced to retain Polo for depth.

My understanding is that Joey has been offered unders and won't sign. Offer has been tabulated obviously including Goddard's salary. I doubt both would go. I still believe the chances of both staying are greater than one or both leaving.

Oh jeez, say it aint so!

reported on radio 2day that freo are chasing goddard hard with a deal around 850 thousand a year for four years and st kilda best offer will b about 550 thousand a year. but this did come from tim gossage who is a st kilda supporter but is also a big douche bag and i would not trust him. but i just thought id let you know wat he said :)

Is there any talk about how many years BJ wants on his contract.
To me, we could offer Joey a year longer and tail end it. By the time the big bucks came, BJ, Riewoldt, DalSanto, and co would probably be retired or not demanding much.
Joey has done a bloody good job for the Saints and probably hasn't seen the financial rewards some of the others have. His injury record is very very good, so I wouldn't expect him to have too rapid a decline in his physical condition.
Given that the cap has a maximum and a minimum, it would help us keep a lid on a future cap.

The Salary cap minimum is around 8.1 million, and the max is 8.8 million. That means a team like melbourne need to pay 8.1 million to their players? That means if they recruit a Goddard and pay him $800 000 they are near the top of the cap. Assuming they want to keep a lid on their younger players until they start showing something, ( face it no-one likes to get a de-raise in the future and there is no such word ) someone must be getting paid overs. I'm sort of guessing that Melbourne is a good place to earn a living if you are a Colin Sylvia or a Brad Green.

Anyway my point is, if we've got a Joey earning too much in four years time, it shouldn't hurt where the team will be by then, and its not like he won't have earnt it.

Then again, there may be value in getting a first round draft pick for him, so he can't exactly hold the team to ransom.

figures align with what i heard as well.

saints 550 is about right IMO. based on form alone he'd command 500. probably give him a bit more as a reward for loyalty.

freo number sounds about right. the years is the kicker though. 4 years at 850k is an amazing deal.

We also want Plugger35 as part of the BJ package thanks.

Can't anyone have a freaking discussion without some smart ass comin in and adding nothing to the discussion but just lays a boot in, thanks now piss off

I wouldn't be averse to losing Joey if it meant getting something (without having any clue any more if we would get anything)
Joey is a fine player and has served us well, but he isn't tearing the house down and isn't what I'd describe as a game breaker/changer
