Saint Goddard close to returning
Nick Sheridan | April 3, 2008

ST KILDA defender Brendon Goddard is likely to make his return from a knee reconstruction in tomorrow night's match against the Western Bulldogs, coach Ross Lyon said yesterday.

Lyon said Goddard, who tore his anterior cruciate ligament in round seven last year, had about 300 minutes of game time under his belt from playing in practice matches and the VFL.

"We'll make some final decisions post-training … but Brendon's a really strong consideration," he said.

Goddard would only be picked if he was considered 100%, Lyon said, as he would not consider nursing him through his reintroduction to the senior ranks.

"Once you get picked, you let it rip and away you go — we won't be protecting anyone. Once you're picked, you're in, you're fit and you're available … there's no easy rides in AFL footy," he said.

I'm really happy with that statement, and it says a lot that at the moment we can make sure that players are 100%.

Was ok, not sure about being a 'real shining light' though. Did anyone else see that Dogs goal where Goddard was facing the other way right in front of the guy? Would have been in the third quarter I think (Dogs were kicking to the Lockett end). Too worried about his man and just let the guy stroll in without so much as looking at him. BJ, I don't care what position he is, if he has a jumper that isn't red, white and black, he's your man!

I have not seen a player return after a full knee reco and play well enough to earn over 100 supercoach points.

This was a remarkable return.

Well done Brendon :thumbsu: :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

If you go on Supercoach then Joel Bowden's one of the best to ever play the game. Just thought he lacked a bit of touch and awareness at times, would have liked another week at the Scorpions. Maybe more than the one half he played last week.

roots around with the ball too much.......puts all the players up the ground out of position !!!!

I trust you're joking mate. He's the best kick in the team by a mile and he was sensational. Very hard to move the ball on quickly when all of the forwards are refusing to present.

LOL, their still seems to be a few of those idiots around that used to bag Goddard week in, week out.

There aren't as many of the Wells > Goddard threads that used to clog up the main board any more, that's for sure.

Great to see Goddard back. His kicking at times is just so impressive it makes you shake your head and go "wow". Hope he stays fit and uninjured and has a great year.

I always follow Goddard closely... you know, cos of that whole... he was almost ours thing. :)

Goddard

How did he look on the weekend?
Didn't get to watch the game but noticed he racked up 10 marks and 20 possesions..

Was he moving as free as he once was, playing the same role, getting good TOG ect..

Cheers

Re: Goddard

I was at the game, however sitting in the bleaches. So it was harder to tell than watching it on TV, however I remember him missing the target by foot on one occasion, which is very un-Goddard like. Did a few nice things, didn't look hampered which I suppose is the main thing. He just looked a little rusty and had a good game without being dominant which we all know he can be. Will get better

He may still lack match fitness though, that's the thing. May also affect his TOG..

Re: Goddard

Will Goddard take over from Sam Fisher's 'attacking loose man in defence' role? It seemed that way against the Doggies and I thought that the Saints missed Fisher's attacking runs through the corridor.

as I have said before PUT HIM in the forward line

with Kossi at chb and goddard in the forward line we would be a completely different team!

so you tell me where the best kick in the team should play ?!!!!!!!!!!

In the midfield, kicking up to our leading fwds - he might be able to kick to advantage or hit someone on the chest, which is something the others are struggling with.

Midfield and floating fwd to kick some goals.

He only ever started playing as a backman to cover injuries. He was a top flight mid as a junior - chuck him back in there, use his pace, size and kicking skills and you never know - he might be another Cooney!
