Finally looks like he is playing like the player he can be. So far this pre season he has been great and not just at finding the footy. Gone have been a lot of his lazy type habits including just walking along behind play, not finding a defensive position and calling for cheap handballs.

His defensive aspects have been as good as anyone, his talk and leadership has gone to another level and i have yet to see him not push to a good defensive position when the opposition has the ball.

If he keeps this up he will be one of the top 2 or 3 important players in the side.

Good work Stants:thumbsu: Finally reaching Full Potential

Did not think I would ever see this thread made. From this person.

Just shows the improvement in Stanton. Fingers crossed that he continues on a similar vein.

He's easily been our best player over the two NAB Cup games...makes you wonder what "clicked" with him RE: Defensive actions

He's always had the elite engine to push hard both ways.

Jones tried to tag him. Was good to see Stanton beat a (physically) stronger opponent.

Jones doesn't have the tank to tag Stanton.

Then again, who does?

Great to see people jumping on board.

Is definitely looking better than last year and has been strong in his outings this year so far. As S_20 has mentioned, he managed to beat Jones on Thursday which is a positive.

With a better midfield we'll see a better Stanton.

I always said he could be elite if he found the other side of his game..

Has anyone else noticed he is also a little more composed with ball in hands (not balls in hand). I've noticed he is kicking longer too, and hitting targets. Maybe under new instructions.....

2004 - 2007. BtG does not own #24 Essendon jumper. ant555 says Stanton is underperfoming.
2008-2010. BtG does not own #5 Essendon jumper. ant555 says Stanton is underperforming.
2011 - ???. BtG owns #5 Essendon jumper. ant555 says Stanton is reaching his potential.

Coincidence? I think not.

Three pre-season games guys. Can we wait for the real stuff to begin before making these calls.

I agree he has looked good so far and he might have turned the corner but there are still 27 days until round 1.

The fact that it is a NAB game makes no difference we already knew he could find the ball and play good footy. Now we are seeing the mindset that will take him to the next level as a player and it is the fact that it is being applied consistently throughout the game that is the difference.
The NAB side of things makes no difference as it is a concentration issue/work rate issue.

So whats the difference between being on the field in the NAB cup and being on the field come season proper?
Are you saying players like to overperform in the NAB cup then underperform when the real stuff starts?

Not sure I understand your logic here .... :p

Yes that is exactly what I'm saying. NAB cup is a zero pressure in enviroment. Turn up the heat and players go missing. Lots of players have looked like stars in the NAB Cup to go on and not do much at AFL level. When Stanton can produce in the home and away season then we can say he has reached "full potential."

This goes the same as for ant's post too. Pressure does funny things to a player and when the real stuff starts he might just fall back into his comfort zone.

I'm not having a go at Stanton here but I think it's way too early to say he has turned the corner and reached full potential.....

For a long time i have held Stants in high regard and whilst it has been true that at times he has let himself down but it is good too see people give him the credit for the effort he has put into improving his game.

I also think Stants is playing better because the gameplan at this stage appears more direct with a better functing forward line reducing the need for the silly sideways kicking that we have seen in recent times.

I reckon Jimmy's positive attitude is another factor

Ant555 has always been consistent in his praise/criticism of Stanton's game.

Has always applauded the offensive side of his game but wanted him to work on the defensive side of his game.

Stantons kicking - Has always been a reliable kick if he has time - His kicking has seemed better in the pre-season - Could be the way the side is structures - Will learn more during the season proper.

24 yrs old, 141 games, often tagged, never really been given help to break it, was 1 player who I thought was def not playing for Knights last year,
I was warried he was going to leave, until I knew Knights was gone and Hird was in.
really I think he can only get better playing under Hird, other players like Zaharakis, Jetta, Melksham, Howlett taking alot of pressure off of him.
seriously this bloke can play, against Geelong last year he was superb.
oh and hasn't he really toughened up, looks so much harder at it all ready.

Stants top 2 B&F 2011.

Let's hope his form this season (and onwards) doesn't dwindle from where it's currently at. Kind of gives you the shits knowing that all this time our "development" coaches under Knights just didn't have anything more to offer our players than playing at a B grade level.

Kudos Stants
Kudos Ess coaches
Kudos Ess administration last year

Its fantastic to see Stanton working both ways and using that massive motor for the good of the side. I agree that his head looked elsewhere at times last year, and his attitude looks to have really turned the corner so far under Hird and co. At his age and experience I think its time we really see him blossom into a quality player. Its hard to believe that his only 24, it feels like he has been with us forever.
