Interesting words from Cooky on Fox Footy Tonight on round table where he said

"That stability is really important but there are times however where its best to change things when you're at you're best......When you're at your best and most successful is when to think about the next stage of development."

He then went on to say

"I've failed to do that (look at the future) a couple of times which has hurt the club" He didn't go any deeper into it than then but his next statement was very interesting.

"I dont want to go through the incidents but it was more in relation to Investments and player list".

Question is what mistakes is Cooky talking about in relation to the list.

Eg: GAJ, SJ (trade deal at end of 14 season)

Clearly he's referring to letting Chappy go. Huge **** up.

I'll be going now...

I think he is talking about his West Coast days - it went very sour for him at the end and they got rid of him

He had a major falling out with the chairman of the Eagles at the time - (Cook has acknowledged that publicly )- so the board of the Eagles got rid of him
Well that's amazing, because we got him before any announcement he was leaving.

Thank God they Did.....Cooky Frank & Bomber saved our Club and we will are all forever grateful

Yes but that means nothing ( the announcement ) - either it was when he was on Mike Sheahans show - or some other one - his contract wouldnt have been renewed at the Eagles - it wasnt a pleasant finish to his time their

In regards to list management though he hasn't made many mistakes......although we should have got more for GAJ it should have been Gold Coasts 1st two picks in the 2010 draft plus 1 after our 1st round pick

How the heck was he going to do that given the FA rules at the time?

What was Ablett worth FA or not ?
Best player in the comp
Cooky did push the AFL for more after the ridiculous 1st offer of 1 1st round pick after our 1st in the draft

Were there set AFL rules for expansion teams or not?

Were there set AFL rules for expansion teams or not?

The AFL made the rules in order for the best player in the comp to be poached from his home town club and for that club to originally not be fairly compensated for the loss of said player

So how was Cook meant to get a better deal then?

I didn't get that impression at all. He spoke of a team winning 80% of its games. That's Geelong.

Investment and playing list he said.

I bet he wishes we invested more/differently to get the bang for the buck out of the premiership years. It would have set us up financially for decades had we been able to get 50,000 members in 2008 and grow it from there.

On the playing list, well, that's for the same old arguments thread. ;)

They certainly missed opportunities with membership, marketing and merchandise. And they've worked hard over the last year or so to change that. Don't know what the playing list part was. It could be something different to what we imagine are the big ones Stevie, Garry and Chappy.

Interesting around the money and clubs losing money. The fact Geelong continued to loose money is unusual considering other factors. We have by most accounts the best ceo and a successful club.
Most other sports globally fans follow their team on tv. So the club should be able to get fans that won't come to many games. But how do you turn those fans into revenue for the club?

The Addy calls that a review?
Now full disclosure I'm a massive footy nerd I love seeing the behind the scenes guys, not just what happens on the field, so this is for the like-minded out there

CEO Roundtable on FoxFooty highlights.

Brian Cook, Brendan Gale, Trevor Nisbett and Gary Pert the invited guests:
  • The CEO role is about building a good team all the way through, from boot studder to themselves. Everyone needs to be clear what their role is. (Cook)
  • Good part of the job is the positive feedback for their community projects. When supporters and members are happy, not dependent on wins and losses. (Nisbett, Pert)
  • Planning has to be a long-term thing 3,5 10 year thinking has to be a norm. (Cook, Pert)
  • Richmond's first focus was to get off field right, lock down the business model now its time to get on field right. (Gale)
  • Sometimes clubs (read Collingwood) allow there to be external noise such as the media and fan base calling for change but as long as the inner sanctum know and understand the direction they don't mind. (Pert)
  • Stability is okay but sometimes when you're at your best it is time to think about what is next best for the club (Cook)
  • There shouldn't be any clubs making losses, there is plenty of money in the game there just isn't enough going to the clubs. Clubs can be their own worst enemies by overpaying for footy department people. The cap on football department spending welcomed by all as a bit of way to stop clubs overspending (All)
  • There is a lot of off-field work done between clubs to try an make all the clubs profitable for it is best for the game. (Pert)
  • Clubs have to now look outside of the box to find revenue only 4 clubs are funded through football revenue everyone else is scrambling to find dollars (Gale, Nisbett)
  • AFL has to be careful how much they give the players under the upcoming CBA, it's possible that if they players are given a % of the games income we could very well lose clubs. Players need to be looked after but it has to be in a fair manner. (Nisbett, Cook)
  • They all understand that there needs to be a discussion on the illicit drugs problem that is in the game. The current policy is a good policy it needs time to bed in. Clubs need to be vigilant to the drug problem. the game is better off for having the hair testing during the off-season but there needs to be better strategies in place to help deal with the issue. This is the number 1 issue to the AFL. Cats have 3 full-time people at the club to help deal with the issue. A lot of the positive test indicate that it was the result of one-time use, not the result of significant use.(All)
  • When picking a coach if you pick one who aligns with your clubs values and vision you'll end up as the CEO having a good honest relationship (Cook)
  • Coaches are no long just the coach of the team, they are the coach of the club and they are the most accountable person in the club (Pert)
  • Coaches contracts are extended to give the coach a sense of strength and positivity and takes some pressure off of them when having a bad period (Gale, Pert)
Now that's a review;)

Loss for them, Gain for us big time! Knew we would get those bastards back eventually after 92/94. :D
