Could enough players in an AFL team be bribed to throw a game?

It has happened in Baseball (White Sox)
It has happened in Soccer (about 6 South American Clubs, Man U goal keeper)
It has happened in Cricket (Cronje and RSA)
It has happened in Boxing (although not a team sport)

I think if 5 players were bribed to play below their best, it would be sufficient for any AFL team to get beaten

Could it have already happened?
There have been some stunning upsets over the years
How much would it take for very high paying players to take a dive - $2 to $3 mill???

Thoughts?

I just don't know if 5 would be enough to influence a game (or any number really - and the more you bribe the worse the chances of getting away with it), plus I wonder if the amounts wagered would justify the exercise

Don't know, but I was reading about the 1919 World Series where 7 players from the White Sox took a bribe to throw the series.
I did a little research that shows it is not that uncommon for key players in a team sport to be be bribed.

I then thought why should it be any different in the AFL

It might explain some of those shots Richo has missed from 10m out!
Or some of those "unlose-able" leads the Tiges have given away. :(

oh agree, there's nothing that makes AFL special or immune, for sure. There'd be plenty of dodgy ********ers in the sport.

But it would be a lot easier to get away with bribing that many 100 years ago.

Not to mention there's far more players in Aussie Rules than baseball, so 7 would be the equivelent of maybe a dozen AFL players.

I think if it was going to happen, maybe bribing umpires would give you far more value for money?

Did you know that "shoeless"Joe Jackson was one of those players and he spend the rest of his life in the minor leagues in the south?

I think 5 would do it. 5 starting 18 players having a shocker and turning the ball over/missing shots would be enough to nearly guarantee a loss i think
Agree.
Take Collingwood

You get Buckley, Tarrant, Rocca, Clement & Didak to take a dive.
We would get slaughtered

I think another good target might be a coach. Throw the players around into unfamiliar positions and you can upset a team fairly well.

Another one for a coach might be on the exotic bets - I imagine in any given week Simon Prestigiacomo is 150-1 to kick the first goal of a match. The coach could load up at those odds and then set up "Presti's Paddock" and try and get him the first goal.

He was the 8th player named as taking a bribe but he denied it.
The other 7 may have used his name to increase the amount they received.
He was offerred $20,000 the night before the game, but apparently he refused to accept it.

Another way is for a club's top 5 players to all get an injury at the same time - it could be fool proof

But from memory he still had to face the NY baseball commissioner and was prevented from playing in the major leagues.

maybe 5 kids might step up though? Unlikely at Collingwood, I admit ;) :p
Well, umm, yes that's right.
Of course you have Courtney Johns to fill the gaps - ooohhh, I bet that hurt.

Maybe bribing a coach could work ..I mean just take GT for example ..he has the best list in the comp and yet they still find a way to lose the big games ....ummm coincidence you ask ??? maybe not *wink *wink *

I dont think you could bribe enough players in a GF to do it. In fact I dont think you'd get any at all. Same with a coach.

Only way Id see a bribe happening is if it is a totally meaningless match.
But for big punters no match is meaningless.
