He's no longer an AFL player - so nothing the AFL can and should do.

Don't see any hypocrisy, Benny did A LOT of silly things and deserved his punishment.
Not saying he didn't deserve punishment, but the punishment he got compared to some others has not been equal. There have been plenty of other players who've done silly things.

For Cousins he was charged with bringing the game into disrepute following the drugs bust that was thrown out of court. No such thing as innocent until proven guilty. Compare that to the Essendon saga. Players where only given provisional bans AFTER the show cause notices were issued and there has been no talk of bringing the game into disrepute.

Ahmed Saad was found guilty of using PED's and was not allowed to have any contact with players or the club for a year. If Essendon players are suspended will those suspensions be backdated considering the players have been completing pre-season training at the club with their team mates?

Essendon were removed from finals and Hird given a year (should have been life) so they copped some fair punishment.

The whole Essendon thing is a mess and to be honest I don't even read anything about it anymore, I don't understand why they aren't playing in NAB, but all I care about is Hird getting the arse, which looks unlikely.

The AFL came out today and said something along the lines of Hird not being punished for what he's done. Now let's be honest here guys, that is utter bullshit. It just goes to show there's one rule for some and another for the privileged few in the AFL. Hird got an all expenses paid, million dollar holiday to Paris for implementing a systematic performance enhancing drug regime and Cuz got threatened with de-registration for rumours. Tell me how that is in any way equal punishment?

The entire concept of 'bringing the game into disrepute' sanctions used by the AFL and many other sporting organisations is utter bullshit. It is all about protecting their precious 'brand' ahead of due process, eg. The assumption of innocence. I'm suprised it doesn't get challenged.

*If* a player/organisation is found guilty of a crime by a court of law then, and only then, should any sanction by the sporting body be considered.

Essendon were prevented from playing finals in 2013. That was way more than any punishment we received. And that was only for club governance, which you could probably argue that we could have been suspended similarly for. Their players are yet to be off the hook regarding potential PED consumption, so they could be further punished. We need to stop playing victim here. We were at fault for our mid 2000's culture. We won a flag, but nearly wrecked the club in the process. But now we're probably the cleanest club in the AFL. And our next flag is going to be soooo sweet. :D

Howdy all

Just want to whinge about the hypocracy that is the AFL.

Does anyone think GC Suns will face any sanctions over K.Hunt etc?

I mean Benny got banned for 12 months and never failed a test. The AFL have set a precedence for this kind of conduct and I hope they come down on the Suns the same way they would if, hypothetically, this was the Eagles in trouble (ignoring that we have prior form)

Thoughts?
I don't recall WC being punished at all.

I can imagine the report in the HS- 1 paragraph on the Suns, 5 paragraphs on Ben cousins and our premiership which was fuelled by drugs, and a throwaway line that our 92/94 flags were also tainted by PED's. :p

...and it'll be put forth by a special guest writer in Robert Walls.

SRS?

They had to overhall the entire organisation.

And Benny getting bannded.... I know it was WC's call, but I dare say the AFL had some (a far bit) of pressure on them to do something when Benny was "caught" in northbridge.

Really? They kept the same coach and most of the senior playing group.

Sure, there was a 'refocusing' on 'values' but that was driven by the Eagles, rather than the AFL.

You say you want the AFL to crack down on the GC the "same way they would if this was the Eagles", but what punishment did WC incur from the AFL?

I don't recall any.

I think you have the facts wrong.

West Coast sacked Cousins in October 2007 – they didn't ban him.

The AFL then banned him for 12 months in November 2007.

How does any of that constitute the AFL punishing WC?

Mate - did you even watch footy then? If so, you would realise that it wasnt until the very very last straw that Eagles acted.

If they wanted to do it to clean up their image, they would have acted when Ken Judge raised the issue.

OK. What's your point?

I still don't recall the AFL punishing WC.

Point being, when the AFL find out which Suns have been caught on tape or charged with possession/intent, I want the AFL to ban the players.

I also want the AFL to threaten GCS with sanctions, ie the loss of premiership points &/or draft picks if it happens again.

Why should the club be held responsible?

Do you really want a situation where clubs lose premiership points for off-field indiscretions?

In my view, that would undermine the integrity of the competition. If you win the games, you get the points. There's no adjustment for who's been a naughty boy. The exception would be in the case of actual cheating eg. PEDs or salary cap rorting. Players doing lines doesn't fall into that category.

No, but if the AFL will hold it over the WCE then they should do the same with GCS. Or you think its all well & good that the GCS players get on the gear?

And, yes, the club should be held responsible for the conduct of its players:confused:

Those players will face the consequences of their actions. But I see no reason to dock the club premiership points or draft picks.

You understand that clubs don't own players, right? They're not their legal guardians.

OK.

Well, you realise that we quite recently had a player go to jail, don't you?

What punishment should we have incurred from the AFL for that? Lost draft picks or lost premiership points?

I dont think you understand what I am saying.....

I dont agree with the AFL taking points. I didnt agree with it when they threatened it to the Eagles.

HOWEVER, Given that the AFL DID THREATEN the Eagles, they should do the same to the GCS considering it is pretty similar.

I never mentioned anything about assaulting people, so dont know why you would even compare the two situations.
