Bears Players Mourn

The Brisbane Bears lost one of the most important people in the club’s history this morning with the passing of former Brisbane Bears owner Reuben Pelerman.

Pelerman, 89, rescued the club in early 1990 following the collapse of inaugural owner Christopher Skase’s Qintex empire. Pelerman propped up the battling Bears for two seasons until handing the club over to a membership based structure in February, 1992.

When the well-known Gold Coast businessman inherited the Bears, all marketing options for the 1990 season had been sold, and the money gone. But Pelerman honoured his commitment and kept the club alive on virtually no revenue.

"All involved with the Brisbane Bear, and particularly those who knew him, have been saddened to learn today of Reuben's passing,” said Bears chairman Ryan Reynolds.

“Reuben took over the ownership of the Brisbane Bears at a most difficult time and kept the club afloat.

“He lost a considerable amount of his own money for the cause, and transferred ownership of the Bear's licence for little consideration, to help it transform into the successful membership-based merger club we have now.

“Without his contribution, the Bears may well have ceased to exist, so we have a lot to thank him for. Reuben Pelerman holds a special place in the history of the
Brisbane Bears .

“He was a self made man and a true philanthropist.”

Downie extended his condolences on behalf of the Brisbane Lions to the Pelerman family, and to Gerald and Judah Moses and their families, who were close business associates and great friends of both Pelerman and the Brisbane Bears/Lions.

Pelerman fought a long battle against Parkinson’s Disease in his latter years. His funeral will be held at 2pm tomorrow (Thursday January 22) at the Gold Coast Hebrew Congregation.

Saints fume at Wallace appointment

The Saints are fuming today after learning that the Lions made an illegal approach and according to them, appointed Terry Wallace, long after the Saints secured his services (page 4 on main thread).
"You can't just go appointing already appointed coaches willy-nilly!", fumed coach Mr. Dascman.
Dascman added that he would like this cleared up as soon as possible.

Micheal voss Knee Injury

Inspirational Holden Brisbane Bears skipper Michael Voss this afternoon expanded on the improving state of his famous right knee after being caught at the centre of a controversy over its condition.

Newspaper reports around the country this morning reported that he would not play ‘indefinitely’ for 2004, although Voss, coach Ryan has confirmed that the five-time club champion is on target to play in Round 1.

“I was a little shocked to see it (the story), not that I was mis-quoted,” Voss said. “I was all quoted right, just taken in the wrong context a little bit.

“I guess I used the word ‘indefinite’, and everyone has a different terminology for what ‘indefinite’ actually means. Just as my ‘heavy’ is different to your ‘heavy’, obviously ‘indefinite’ has a different meaning to other people too.

“When I said indefinitely, it was because I don’t know whether it’s going to be two weeks, four weeks, six weeks (before he feels the knee is right); not 20 weeks, end of next year or maybe never. It was more of a shorter term thing.”

Voss has been following a carefully managed rehabilitation program since the start of summer after his knee tendonitis hampered him through the second half of last season, and particularly the finals series.

“Everything is going according to plan and everything in terms of my rehabilitation is where I should be at, and that is to play Round 1,” he said. “There has been no change to that. Yes, there is a 10 percent possibility that it could be halfway through the year and yes, I am keen to get my knee right as best I can.”

Voss confirmed that he won’t take any risks for the sake of playing in Round 1, still two months away on March 27 when the Lions tackle the Sydney Swans at the Gabba.

“The point of trying to play with painkillers in Round 1 would really shorten my career and that’s not where Leigh would like to see me and I don’t think that’s where our medical staff would like to see me. Quite honestly, I don’t think they would apply it anyway,” he said.

“From that end, it’s (painkillers) something I definitely don’t want to do because of the fact I want to be as best as I possibly can when I start the season and there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be almost near-perfect by the time I start the season.

“Yes, it’s going to be an ongoing maintenance thing throughout the year, as it will be for the rest of my career, but it’s certainly not career-threatening at this stage.”

Asked when his best estimate for a return would be, Voss had no hesitation in nominating Round 1.

“Round 1 is what I’m anticipating, and I’m 90 percent sure that will be the case,” he said. “There’s always that 10 percent possibility (that I won’t) just for the sheer fact that it is a session-by-session thing.

“If it (the knee) doesn’t react too well to something, it’s probably going to put me back a couple of days. But I’ve given myself enough margin for error that I’m probably going to have a couple of those little hiccups along the way, and it’s still two months to the start of the season.

“I’ve been running on a treadmill and hoping to join in (full) training in the next couple of weeks.”

Voss said his intention to talk publicly about the knee in the first instance was to give fans an accurate gauge as to where he was at with his rehabilitation.

“What was meant to be a situation where I thought I would be able to answer all the questions and not be asked about it again has turned into the complete opposite,” he said.

“Like I said, there was nothing mis-quoted in there – I guess it’s how you interpret it.

“It was probably taken a little bit out of context…(but) I’ve got no beef with them at all. I said all those things so that’s my fault I guess.

“I should be a little bit more precise in exactly what I say…define a little bit better, like the word ‘indefinitely’.”

Why Voss Is Hot Property

For one man to win five best and fairest awards at an AFL club is a supreme achievement registered by a gifted few. To do so during the golden era of a team recognised as one of the best of all time is simply extraordinary.

However, for those who watched Michael Voss’ almost super-human performances throughout 2003, it was no surprise that he should claim the Brisbane Bears club championship for a record fifth time.

Twice during the Lions’ three premiership years Voss has won the Merrett-Murray Medal – and on the other occasion he finished runner-up. During the Leigh Matthews era, Voss has won the best and fairest three times, his other win coming in 2000 when the Lions finished fifth. His first two victories were with the Brisbane Bears in 1995-96.

This time around Voss polled 71 votes to finish one ahead of joint runners-up Simon Black and Luke Power, with Ex Bear Nigel Lappin back in fourth place on 64 votes. Voss leapt to the front from the start with a 4.0 vote against Essendon in Round 1 and was never headed. Mal Michael shared the lead with him after Round 2, but another 4.0 vote in Round 3 set Voss away to a much-deserved win.

His fifth club champion win sent him into illustrious company, moving into the all-time top 10 players for winning most club best and fairest awards. He still has some way to go, however, to reach the man who co-presented his medal to him on club championship night.

The ‘heart’ of Fitzroy, Kevin Murray – in whose honour the Brisbane Lions’ best and fairest medal is named alongside the great Bear Roger Merrett – won a staggering nine best players awards for the old Lions between 1956 and 1969. It is a record he still shares great South Melbourne rover Bob Skilton.

Voss’ current Assistant coach Leigh Matthews sits third all-time with eight best and fairests at Hawthorn, followed by Gary Dempsey (Footscray), Bill Hutchison (Essendon) and **** Reynolds (Essendon) with seven, and Jack Dyer (Richmond), John Murphy (Fitzroy/South Melbourne) and Nathan Buckley (Collingwood) with six.

Voss’ heroics over the season were also recognised by three media outlets. He won the Courier-Mail Player of the Year, a long running award for the best Brisbane Bears player as voted by football writer Darren Cartwright and a guest judge each week.

He also finished five votes clear in the prestigious Herald-Sun award which earned him $10,000 and a magnificent trophy, and the prestigious Radio 3AW Footballer of the Year prize, which he shared with Collingwood rival Buckley.

Then there were the peer awards – opposition players from around the league comprehensively voted Voss as the league’s Most Valuable Player in 2003, as well as Best Captain. He received the same awards last season. And he was marginally edged out by Glenn Archer as Most Courageous Player.

Voss said none of the many accolades that have come his way could have been achieved without his teammates. “I have won these awards because of the success of the guys. I won the (AFLPA) MVP because of the team success, like Blacky with the Norm Smith Medal. I strongly believe it is the team that makes the individual,” he said.

Voss also gave an insight into the support provided to him as skipper since Leigh Matthews came to the club in late 1998. “Leigh has been sensational – he grabbed me straight away and tried to guide me and taught me to be the best leader I could be,” he said, adding that he has had some very good role models since playing at Morningside as a 16-year-old.

“I think I’ve been blessed in that regard. When I started out there was a great guy called Darryl Bourke who led the club admirably, then to the Brisbane Bears and the big fella Roger was skipper. He was everything the club wanted a captain to be – tough, courageous and loyal. There was a real hole when Rog retired.”

Great leadership qualities were not restricted to Voss through 2003, however. Black was outstanding with the way he stepped up in the grand final with doubts over so many players’ fitness. Black’s 39-possessions/nine tackle performance earned him one of only two 4.5 votes for the season, and saw him catch Power for second place in final voting.

Emerging 20-year-old Ash McGrath was the other 4.5-star performer, his six goals and fierce tackling performance against the Western Bulldogs in Round 22 being rated the best individual effort of the year until Black’s monster day out against Collingwood. McGrath finished with 40 votes for the season and was an easy choice for the Rookie of the Year award, having gained a National Rising Star nomination in Round 22.

There was a subtle change to the club champion voting system this year, with the match committee of Leigh Matthews and his assistants casting half votes. “It just gave us that bit more scope to differentiate between players,” Matthews explained. Players previously could be awarded from 0 to 5 votes per game, but this year the coaching panel awarded 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 votes as well.

The system aids the players who play the most games during the season, which places an extra value on staying fit and healthy.

Black and Power played all 26 games this season, as did top 10 finisher Jamie Charman. Voss managed 25 games, although he spent the bulk of at least three on the bench. Nigel Lappin, Justin Leppitsch and Alastair Lynch, who finished fourth, seventh and equal eighth respectively, polled particularly well from only 22 games each.

Lappin had moved to within a vote of Voss – and led the Brownlow Medal – after Round 15 but missed a crucial month with a badly corked thigh that took a long time to heal. It came at a similar stage of the season to the previous year when a seven-week absence cost him a big lead in the Merrett-Murray Medal.

Black echoed the sentiments of many of his teammates when he offered conciliatory thoughts to Lappin at the presentation evening, which was held at the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre in front of a crowd of almost 1000 people.

“I said the same thing to Nigel as I did at this time last year. I hope he has a full year next year because he deserves to be up here (as a club champion),” Black said.

Power’s joint runner-up finish with Black proved his coming of age in 2003. He spent substantial time in the midfield and was dynamic off half-back through the finals. So good was Power through September that he won the prestigious Player of the Finals Award. And he joined Black in collecting one of the two tackling awards on offer for their outstanding defensive efforts over the season.

Lynch’s club record 78 goals for the season at the age of 35 was rewarded with his top 10 placing, while 32-year-old Shaun Hart confirmed one of his best seasons in 14 at AFL level with a thoroughly deserved fifth placing. And 31-year-old Martin Pike capped a great year for the veterans by sharing eighth place with Lynch.

Joint 1999 club champion Jason Akermanis finished the season with a rush, after slipping out of the top 10 after Round 10. Coaching Leigh Matthews noted to the media late in the season that Akermanis visibly looked to be a lot freer with his running after suffering back related hamstring problems for the first two-thirds of the year.

So good was he over the last 10 weeks that he polled the same number of votes as Black in that time, with Jonathan Brown the only man to poll more in that period, and finished in sixth place.

Mal Michael made it three top 10 finishes in three seasons since being swapped for Jarrod Molloy at Collingwood, with Brown finishing Michael and the energetic Charman.

Alongside Lappin, the biggest hard luck story of the count was Brad Scott, who sat in fourth place after Round 20. His broken leg at Telstra Dome in Round 22 saw him drop to 13th place by the time the finals had been completed.

Missing five games played a part in Chris Johnson’s 14th placing, which only served to highlight the strength of the Lions line-up as most had the brilliant defender in their top contenders for All-Australian selection.

Daniel Bradshaw’s move to defence in Round 17 saw him start to rocket up the leaderboard and ultimately finish 15th. Bradshaw had polled 21 votes to then, but more than doubled that tally in the last nine games to accrue 44 votes. Despite playing his 100th career game in Sydney in Round 7, he was still judged the most improved player for his important contribution at the business end of the year.

Interestingly, only in 13 of the 26 games played was a single player voted as being clearly his side’s best, with the other 13 games seeing multiple players sharing the top vote. In the Round 18 win over the Kangaroos, 13 players received the top vote of the night, a 3.0.

Voss was deemed to be best player, either individually or shared, eight times. Next best was Lynch and Brown with six apiece, Brown’s five coming in the last nine weeks. Power was voted best on five occasions.

Not surprisingly, the grand final saw the most number of votes cast for a single game, with all 22 players receiving at least one vote in a total of 64.0. The Rounds 10 and 22 demolitions of Carlton and the Bulldogs respectively were the next highest scoring team games with 59 votes cast in each.

Easily the lowest total was the meagre 20 handed out for the big loss to West Coast in Round 12 – and that included a 4.0 to Lynch for his eight goals! The next worst games were the 32 votes handed out in the Rounds 7 and 20 losses to Sydney.
