Im looking at investing into Broadband internet at home. I was wondering what kind of plans you guys are on and through what companys? Is there anyone I should be avioding? Any recommendations on what I should be looking at speed and download limit wise? I cant see myself downloading huge movie files but you never know once you have it I guess

cheers

Avoid anyone who charges extra for exceeding your download limit, especially Telstra.
Avoid Telstra.
Avoid Telstra.

Go to www.whirlpool.net.au - it'll steer you straight.

Incidentally, I'm on the same as rfc - there are better deals for broadband, but there are not better phone + broadband deals - at least there weren't six months ago. There might be now.

I have iinet, they had a lot of problems earlier in the year, but are great now.
For $80 a month, you get 32GB, which is 16 on peak, and 16 off.
Also Even if you exceed that limit (which i do every month) you will only get shaped to slower speeds during peak times of the network, which is usually about 7pm-11pm.

Whirlpool is cool, look at the broadband choice

Now onto Telstra, yeah they suck, but you could be in a position like me where i can't get DSL, so i am either stuck with crappy ISDN, dialup at 3k (crappy lines i think) or Bigpond Cable

If you want broadband and can't get ADSL get Telstra cable (if you can), it is awsome, just go with the unlimited* plan, even if you can get ADSL, i would still look into cable, as the download speed is better then any ADSL plan's, although it is more of shared resource so could be a bit on the slow side at times, oh and you get the free videos of afl and nrl games, amongst other stuff.

I am with Westnet .. they are great .. fantastic rates!
As for Telstra, I actually work for Bigpond!

A lot of the problems that Bigpond have at the moment are due to their very limited billing system.

Fortunately we are working on a new system which will hopefully be available in the new year ... should see improved billing etc from then on.

Broadband Choice / Whirlpool certainly is the best place to shop around for pricing...!

I'm switching to AAPT, broadband, I am just waiting for them to send a cable modem, which will be here sometime this month, or early next.

I'm with Internode for broadband. $150 a month.
1500k download, 256k upload.
& unlimited. (thank god for that, cause we average 2gb a day in downloads :D )

but i've found them to be very good.... only think they're in south australia though.

I was gonna get ADSL, but my home is a little too far from the exchange.

Anyway, when I was researching choices, Whirpool was handy. TPG offered the best prices for me, but apparently their customers service is ********e. Just make sure you do your research, ie. if you want to play online games TPG might not be the best option for you.

Just out of interest, what are the download speeds actually like? Im on a 56k at the moment but I dont download at 56k/s now do I :) 4 or 5 if im lucky. How much usage does online games take up?

That's because when they say 56 Kbs it measures bits per second. But when you look at the speed actually downloading, it's display KBs or bytes per second. There are 8 bits per byte. So in theory, the top speed of a 56 Kbs modem is 7 KBs. Other factors come into pay as well due to the way TCPIP work, so you might get only 5 KBs. With a 512 Kbs ADSL, I typically download at just over 60KBs when conditions are right.

ISP: Netspace ADSL
512kbps down / 128 kbps up

$69.95 a month, 32gig limit, Pretty good plan for ADSL in my opinion and rarely ever goes down.

i can back that up and if it did go down you can always use your free dial up account that you get as back up. this dial up 56 k connection can be accessed from anywhere in the major states

I'm with iiNet as well after switching from Optusnet Cable. Its not as fast, obviously, but is made up for by the 24GB (12 peak, 12 off-peak) i can d/l per month.

I consider myself a 'reasonable' downloader (not a full-on leecher) and am struggling to use up the 24GB. What the hell do you download to push 32GB per month?

thats my problem, i'm a bit of a leecher..
i download stuff from heaps of torrent pages (movies, tv shows, that sort of thing...)

which was why i needed to get unlimited... cause we download roughly 2gb a day.

Go cable if possible. Else go wireless if possible.

Why?

Easy answer ... VOIP. Replace your phone with a phone using your net connection. Turn a $30 line rental into $5 or $10. Best way is to NOT have a home "land"line, but to use your broadband connection.

If you have DSL you MUST keep a landline, but if you have cable or wireless you don't need that copper line anymore. You keep a local number, so people can call you without calling your mobile, but not via the copper.

Go to OzVoip to see just what is available, and check backregularly because the landscape keeps changing!

Im with telstra.. only ISP that offers cable in my area. I haven't really had a problem with them. They have been known to be expensive, but they generally have the better service.
