just seen dodo advertise broadband connection for about $40, and you get
*dl speed of 245bps
*unlimited data dl
*first 3 months free

this sounds too good to be true compared to other service providers......there must be a hidden catch.

I' afraid that Telstra is not to blame. ADSL connections need to be within a predetermined vicinity of the exchange. If you are further than the limit - even by 10m you'll get denied.

not correct, distance isn't always the issue, there are people on whirlpool that have got it much further then the recommended distance to the exchange, the bigger issue is telstra db that list your copper size and other requirements, i myself have failed it, i had to much signal lose, but i am pretty sure i am within the recommended distance it is just the lines that run to my house according to telstra db are well sh*t. Mine you they may use the 10m to far to deny you going to a competitor or so the consiparcy is amongst others.

I've been with Dodo (adsl 64/256) for around 12 months. Very good service, rarely ever had a dropout or any downtime. Truly unlimited downloads. No hidden costs. Ideal for a heavy user.

But the 120m down the road is actually further away from our nearest exchange

Also, I remember reading about a year ago that Telstra will stop building anymore exchanges once they reach 500, which essentially means newer suburbs will be fcuked.

i thought another factor is how many ports or whatever they call them are available at the exchange as demand increases more of these adsl enabled outlets are added to the exchange.

My billion 5100 craped it self inside 7 months, also very hard to configure.

I've had an older and a newer style alcatel speedtouch and never had a problem with either over a period of three years.

Have also used an alcatel 510 with no problem.

However if you're going to buy a modem you want to consider the following which I have found to be major issues:

1/. If you get a usb modem such as a speedtouch, then your pc is connected directly to the Internet. This is significant if you ever want to run a website or netmeeting direct from your pc.

2/. Usb modems are very hard to configure and run on Linux systems

3/. If you want to have more than one computer connected or you have a laptop, then you would be better off getting an ethernet modem, or if you can afford it a wireless modem, otherwise you'll always have to have the primary pc on and configured to have Internet sharing on when you are connected.

Running Bigpond Cable here off a splitter from the Foxtel connection. Plan costs $54.95 per month.

Usually get a 500K connection, but if the Foxtel box is switched off, this jumps up to 660-700K..

Pretty good value (plus you get the afl.com.au content for free).

But I still hate Telstra - have the phone with Primus.

Soon to be running wireless for convenience, but you get restricted to a 100K connection between the router and the notebook.

Add to that if you buy a router rather than a modem the whole thing is easier to set up if you have more than one machine - you don't need to do Internet Connection Sharing at all. In fact a router is probably the easiest way to set up broadband with a PC(unless you have XP) as you just set up your PC as if it was connected to a LAN.

Oh, and if you connect via a router, they usually have built in firewalls, so they protect your machine somewhat from worms like the Blaster and Sasser worms as your machine cannot be directly attacked from the Internet - if you connect a DSL modem directly to your machine you are opening it up directly to the Internet (same if you're using dial up for that matter), and you are easier to attack if your machine is vulnerable.

We had the same problem where we use to live, I cannot remember what we done to get it. But it was something along the lines that we needed it to run our business (which we did). That was on 1.5GIG not the 500K though.

Since then we have swapped over to optus broadband as telstra is a load of ****.

Let me see....245 bits per second.

Subtract 10% for resends and assorted guff.

That leaves 220 bits per second.

Or 27 bytes per second.

37 seconds per kbyte.

10 hours and 16 minutes per Meg.

I hope you aren't planning on downloading movies :D

299.5 days per 700MB movie.

And that's "broadband". I'd hate to see their dialup service ;)

Prices are continuing to plummet.

Right now I can get for $A19 per month

  • 512 kb
  • unlimited downloads
  • no installation costs
  • no fixed contract time, I can cancel at any time (1 months notice)

And this is from a national telephone company, not some two-bit reseller who floods their pipes.

But I'm bloody stuck on a more expensive fixed price job which I can't get out of until September
