The boys are back

The Magpies returned to pre-season training on Wednesday morning, commencing with a 2km time trial, an extended skills session, a rigorous work out in the weight room, before breaking for lunch, then a team meeting.

Veteran skipper Nathan Buckley was amongst the strongest on the track, along with Adam Iacobucci, Chris Egan, Julian Rowe and Leon Davis - who all made significant improvements to their impressive time trials from before the 10 day break.

The biggest improver was Cameron Cloke, who finished notably in the lead pack, taking over 30 seconds off his previous time.

Collingwood Assistant Coach Adrian Fletcher said that the boys looked happy to be back out on the track after some time off, with many of the players showing marked improvements.

“It’s great to see the boys back looking so fit and running strong.

“They’ve clocked some impressive times. It’s only early days but this is when we build the base for the season – and we are very positive about the summer ahead.”

Joining the coaching staff this season is 1990 Collingwood premiership player Michael Christian, who will work part-time as a specialist key position defensive coach.

In addition, former Geelong ruckman Darren Flannigan has joined the Magpies as specialist ruck coach. Flannigan has spent the last two years with the Melbourne Football Club as their specialist ruck coach, while also working with young talent for over five years at the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Under 18 Competition.
THANK ******** FOR THAT!!!!!

who was our previous ruck coach? or didn't we have one last season?

and can anyone shed any light onto David flannigan, can't recall what sort of player he was

I may be wrong but I think it was mainly McKee coaching the ruck this year?

The correct answer is that we've never had a propper ruck coach, or ruckman, since Malthouse arrived. Balme, who somehow thought he could teach ruck, and we somehow let him. Word was Peter Moore turned up once, but that might be an internet rumour. Then we handed the reigns over to Stunning Steve McKee, who had the bulk of his training under Balme.

Flannigan, outside of being a great Dublin pub, played for Geelong. He's recently coached Melbourne's ruck division. Dunno how good he is at coaching, but he absolutely cannot be any worse!!

Your right about stunna being our ruck coach, shameful!!!

strikes me as odd that our club wouldn't employ the best ruck coach avaliable considering that our ruckman have been our greatest weakness since monky started to fade.

I think i'll begin rioting if eddie signs MM up to early nect year

So it had to come to this - Jason Cloke out shinning all our rucks and getting votes – for the brains in charge to realise that in 6 seasons as coach Malthouse has not been able to coach the team to win two consecutive games or more than handful in total in the ruck and has allowed us to be rucked out of two premiership deciding matches. Finally we get a ruck coach with at least some sort of credentials. Even then, he’s coach number 437 on the MM yes man panel.

What happens if Falnningan tells MM that his ruckman just any good at it?

What happens if MM had the quality ruckmen all along, just needed a bit of luck with injury and a decent coach?

What happens? I and hundreds of thousands of Collingwood supporters do cartwheels. What would you do if Jesus came to Collingwood?

Seriously hotpie, what injury luck did MM need in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004? 2005 I'll give you for the sake of the argument and maybe Richards cost us in 2004. I hope so or else we are in real strife. We'd already lost 2 grand finals and were beaten in the ruck both times by then. Even if he lacked a bit of luck and ruck coach since I'd say that's a damn good reason to sack him. Fancy getting 800k to rely on the fitness of a chronically injured player and the coaching skills of a ruckman you sacked because he was not nearly good enough at being a ruckman (let alone giving up Pavlich to get him in the first place).

Bad luck my bum. It is lack of ability and bad management. The sooner we realise that and act accordingly the sooner we can win a premiership.

Wasnt Balme's style of rucking swinging his arms around like windmills and connecting with heads.
