My hypothesis is that Brian 'Bristle' 'BT' Taylor is in fact good for the game of Australian rules football and ultimately positive, a sponsor of the AFL as a competition.

He brings excitement and personality to an array of 'journalists' who do nothing but fawn over animals (Gerard Whateley), slobber absolute gibberish (Mark Robinson), and essentially cuddle one another on pay TV (Danny Frawley and Jason Dunstall). This is someone who may be a bit of a dick, but he adds genuine entertainment value in games that are lacking it (of which there were too many in 2015) and really bolsters it in finals and finals like matches.

Guys like Basil are essentially mopey, one-tone and unable to enable or elicit any serious excitement in even classic matches.

Why do people hate BT?

Is it because they are ultra boring twats?

Brian Taylor is potentially the final cult hero of the AFL.

And no, Jake Package looking 33 at 20 and having seven kids already is barely cultish.

Go on.

Watching a Freo game smashed with a group of mates with BT commentating is quite good I have to admit. Has a love affair with a number of our players, particularly Clancee Pearce (only in white shorts), Baar-low, San-dee-lands and of course, Hayden Ballantyne. The two joined forces here to create the most hilarious few minutes I've ever seen.

Alone and sober it's pretty horrible though and I can understand why many people would despise him. Definitely a highly egocentric and highly immature individual.

I tell u what I wouldn't be watching Saturday night footy without BT he's my favourite commentator and live the way he commentates brings excitement to the game

I don't get the extreme hate. His commentating is quite exciting. He is also more neutral than some other commentators in a match. Some of his expressions make me laugh.

Not sure about a good sponsor of the game though

BOY OH BOY, WOWEE. I WONDER WHAT THE REST OF THE FORUM WILL THINK ABOUT THAT RICHO!

This explains why he is not good for the game. He is simply there to entertain theatre goers rather than genuine football fans that do not need the over the top "Boy oh boy, Wowee" bullshit hype to artificially "bring excitement" to those that need that stuff to even feel excited. A person genuinely interested in the game as a sport does not need it. If you need it then your not enough into the football itself to matter long term for the game of football overall.

I notice Freddie Flintoff tries to do the same style when he is on BBL tv. Does nothing for me as a genuine cricket fan but those that theatre goers will likely tune in just as they drawn to any hype.

I'm not saying the game doesn't excite me I'm saying he adds to the atmosphere off the game and makes it a better spectacle for me as a viewer

The AFL is interested in bringing in more supporters and overhyped commentating can really make a game seem exciting to people who don't follow the sport. Hence, his enthusiastic style of commentating can actually interest non-followers of footy into following footy. Eventually, you'll have some of them turn into regular supporters once they understand and like the game. So, I kind of see the OP's point from this perspective

That's ok. If he does for you that is ok for you. Good for tv ratings for that station. But if you said you will not watch it if he is not commentating makes it seem your interest in the game itself it rather flimsy in terms of that sport itself.
On the contrary, I am into the sport enough that even an annoying commentator or two will not stop me watching if my interest in the sport is deep enough.

He would be better if he toned it down a bit but I must admit to being one of the few people that like him.

I think you are one of the very very people who like him. Actually if you are head of his fan club, you could probably hold your AGM in a telephone box !!!

Actually TBH he doesn't really worry me when I am watching a game he is calling because as I realise he is commentating, I hit the mute button straight away.
