He hams it up. Take it or leave it.

He's a positive, upbeat kind of guy.

In the words of the great cover by Metallica...so what so what you boring little ####!!

Works brilliantly with MMM
Footy used to be an entertainment business now it's just business and anyone trying to entertain gets shot down

Some people find it entertaining , I like the style of commentary that him , James Brayshaw an blokes like Rex hunt added to the footy

I hate the style of commentary that Bruce , basil and co bring it's extremely sabitized an tries to make you feel guilty for enjoying a bump or a wrestle they literally take the fun aspect out of the sport an commentate like a worried mother

This explains why he is not good for the game. He is simply there to entertain theatre goers rather than genuine football fans that do not need the over the top "Boy oh boy, Wowee" bullshit hype to artificially "bring excitement" to those that need that stuff to even feel excited. A person genuinely interested in the game as a sport does not need it. If you need it then your not enough into the football itself to matter long term for the game of football overall.

I notice Freddie Flintoff tries to do the same style when he is on BBL tv. Does nothing for me as a genuine cricket fan but those that theatre goers will likely tune in just as they drawn to any hype.

Mmm, I'm most certainly interested immensely in both AFL and cricket and enjoy both of these two commentators. The AFL in general has very poor commenta so it's hard to compare him to many others (probably the only good play-by-play commentator is Hudson) but in cricket I look at it like this:

The Channel 9 Test team is atrocious. Lawry and Nicholas are the only two who don't make me constantly reach for the mute button. Grandstand is a bit better. The BBL commentary matches the sport and most of them either provide good insight (see Ponting) or entertainment (see Fleming/Flintoff). The only one that grinds on a bit like the Channel 9 guys is Waugh.

If push came to shove I'd much rather Ponting/Lawry over Flintoff, sure, but give me Flintoff any day of the week over the rest of them because he's just providing harmless fun, not some useless dribble that is neither entertaining nor informative. I consider BT in the same manner (although of a much much much lesser quality).

People like OP are the reason why we can't have anything nice. The problem is that the OP is kind of right for a lot of knuckle draggers. I believe my username was inspired from a Documentary about this phenomenon.

So it is people like you I have to blame for being subjected to these crap excuses for "exciting" commentator.
Oh well. It is what it is, I can see I am always going to have to put up with these type of commentators as long as there is many you like that find it "entertaining"
Given the amount of garbage hype shows like Australia's has got talent or X factor type things I see on adds that I'd rather put my balls in a vice than watch, I guess I am heavily outnumbered. This is the type of thing you people want, so be it. I guess I should be grateful I don't have the same commentators every game like this.

Anthony Hudson adds excitement through his call without having to resort to inane comments like BT.
That's the issue for me.

BT may not a boring clot in the same way Rompingwins and Basil are, but he can achieve all of what the OP says he does without the level of stupidity he also sometimes brings.

Hudson is indeed the perfect example.

But then I also don't blame BT in his entirety, it's more than he's sold himself out to Seven and is playing up the idiot role that they've obviously instructed him to play.

Hes playing his MMM persona in a far less funny environment, he is ten times funnier when he has Brayshaw, Lyon Dunstall and Frawley to bounce off

Even if he toned down the nonsense he still doesn't know how to call a game. Constantly getting names wrong and not understanding what is going on.

He's like Rex Hunt. Massive flog but can you laugh at the ridiculousness of it sometimes.

Watching the AFL Live commentary of the 2014 GF for example. Hodge marks and goals from the Swans kick in and Rex starts squealing as high pitched as he can for about a minute straight (fat lady singing) and then talking about the 'absolute destroyation'.

He was a nightmare to listen to during Hawks games. He rarely got any of our indigenous players names right (adding Gibson to that list). It is actually infuriating.

The other one is how he goes on a 5 minute tirade about a players made up name when he touches the ball. Commentating has moved on from his type, particularly TV commentary

Brian Taylor is great....if you're after someone to preform an on-air extermination of your auditory sensory receptors.
