Buckley out indefinitely
March 30, 2005

AFL club Collingwood has ruled out its star captain Nathan Buckley for an indefinite period because of concerns over his hamstrings.

Buckley, 32, appeared to have re-injured his hamstring in Monday's loss to Western Bulldogs, having not played a game during the pre-season because of injury.

"Prior to Monday's game, Nathan had passed every benchmark in relation to rehabilitation from a hamstring injury," the club said in a statement.

"However, under match-day pressure Nathan could not reach and maintain 100 per cent intensity."

Buckley has been plagued by hamstring troubles since early in the 2004 season, when he missed seven games.

Collingwood said Buckley's injury was caused by chronic scar tissue, which limited his ability to fully extend himself during games.

"The club is exploring all avenues to rectify the problem and is confident that Nathan will make a full recovery and return to lead the team," the Magpies said.

One man is not a team but could make a difference to this weeks game.

Even though Buckley has masacred us in the past, I wasn't too concerned if he played this week, as he is obviously nowhere near fit. Actually think the Pies are better off not playing him based on his current fitness level, as they are virtually 1 man down.

This is very sad realy. As much as you love to hate figjam, it is always sad to see a great career start to unravel through injury. It almost seems like the Brownlow was the kiss of death for him.

Bucks didn't play in our loss to the Pies last year. Wouldn't have had an impact if he had played this week anyway, IMO. The guy looks absolutely buggered.

No disrespect to Burns, Licuria or Woewodin...However, I think Rocca & Tarrant will be the difference between us getting 4 points or 0 points. Let's hope our defence is on the ball or that they knock each other out at training this week.

Let's hope we can overcome our Collingwood hoodoo this week!

I would of thought this week with Buckley fit Collingwood might have had a chance to beat Adelaide this week but its now getting increasingly difficult to work out when Collingwood are going to notch up their first win of the season

Rocca isnt the player he was, Kenny will be fine on him

Tarrant will be a worry, bassett did a shocking job on him last yr, i hope we dont give him much space to lead into. As long as we make it contested, we'll be fine, tarrant cant take a contested mark.

Game plan will be what does it. We certainly have the talent edge, but need to exploit it. Get to see how good NC is.

I would have preferred if Buckley was playing.

Collingwood will now batten down the hatches, Malthouse will adopt a siege mentality, backs against the wall and they'll fight tooth and nail for this one. It'll be a 4 quarter scrap that'll suit them down to a tee.

And with our record away against the Pies, it's not looking good. At least it makes my tipping easier, some difficult games this week.

Nathan Bassett will be very improtant this week against Tarrant.
Rutten I would of thought will get the job on Tarrant but Bassett will have to continually fille the hole in front of Tarrant to block his lead. This, I feel is the only way we can stop him. Rutten will not be mobile enough but in tandem with Bassett I can see us containing him.

Playing Rutten on Tarrant is suicide. Ben Hart should get the job as he matches him for height and mobility.

Tarrant has killed us when the Pies have dominated the midfield. Surely this won't happen this week!

Bad luck for FIGJAM but the ferals will still field 22 players who will have a fair dinkum crack.

We need to win this one and I still not sure who to tip. Licuria has a pretty good record against Roo so other midfielders really have to step up. Tarrant is the X factor IMHO.

I think Rutten will surprise you, he will need the aid of his team mates like Bassett as I mentioned above.
I dont think Hart has the strength or the match fitness to go with Tarrant just yet.
Have Benny playing on a lesser light so we can use his skills and footy smarts to punish the Pies on the rebound.

Great news but still a few Collingwood players we have to watch Lockyer, Lucuria and Davis all dangerous and if not maned up can create alot of problems, would expect Hart to get Tarrant, Rutten on Rocca and Bassett to take Davis :)

I still get the feeling that we are finally since Rnd 9 1998 that we are going to beat Collingwood in Melbourne ;)

A worry to see so many brilliant playas brought down through injury, beating an underdone team is never as rewarding as beating them at full strength...

Never been a Buckley fan but you have to respect talent and give credit where credit is due, he's a gun player at his best, as can be seen on many occasions vs. the crows in the past.

Agreed Tarrant and Rocca will be two of the most imposing players against us this weekend but... Based on last week's performance the backline is probably the most reliable line that the crows fielded...

And my theory has always been if you can choke the opposition's midfield you can prevent it even making it down that way or at least prevent good delivery to the forwards and relieve the pressure on the backline, so i think the midfield will (as most weeks) be the most important battle out there !

Here's hoping all the guys are willing to stand up this weekend though...

Don't be so charitable about beating any under-manned or under-done team. ;)

Nobody gave a fat rat's tossbag about beating our half-manned teams last year.

Any win is bloody rewarding.

Hehe.
Chief Crazy Al :p :D

Don't worry about Tarrant or Rocca.
Stop Davis and Licuria, and you'll win.
