For the whole game today, the Channel 7 commentators (I was playing footy so couldn't get to the game) were raving about this guy. At one point I think one of them said that he was "living up to his last name." People will probably disagree with me but I really don't think he has been that great. His kicking is poor. He loves to take on the tackle, which is I guess good that he has the confidence, but 8 times out of 10 he is caught and turns it over. Thoughts?

He wasn't great, but he's prepared to back himself and run some lines; even though he tries to break one too many tackles or run himself into a dead end.

I really like the way he goes about his footy, he makes mistakes sure but he is young and learning and unlike Morton he is confident and takes risks...

I really enjoy is running bold play.. keep him in week in and week out and he will only get better with experience.

Caught 8/10 times?

Ridiculous, Try about 2.

He will be a gun. Go away the others praising him, I've been on him since last year :p .

I wasn't sold on him but he is growing on me. Gets alot of the pill and breaks the lines. If he improves his disposal he will become a great player.

Buckley is coming along okay. Looks promising but like all young players he needs to continue to improve steadily if he wants to continue to wear the red and blue jumper.
Melbourne needs guys like Buckley to make it as top 100 game plus players.
Good luck to him. He does have some pace which I like.

His ability to break the line was good to watch. Compare him to Morton, who just stops and handballs to death. Or ****ing Bruce. He is coming on good I say. Now is the time to try anything - there are a few on this list who won't be there next year...

very funny player to watch. he can not just stop and look for a good option
HE HAS TO PLAY ON

i could not help but laugh when he played on from the kick in and got pinged

I think Dennis at one stage said 'he makes things happen', which is somewhat true. If the ball was in Bruce's hands at the half back line you'd get 5 kicks sideways and less than 20m, 2 turnovers, 2 long kicks up the line and 1 good result. With Buckley he plays on, 5 times he gets trapped and might go backwards or handball to someone in trouble, 3 times he breaks the lines and potentially creates a beautiful piece of play, 2 times he turns it over. Personally I like the Buckley result, and when combined with a functional forward line he could become a weapon.

I'm definately not saying there aren't promising signs but too often IMO he makes the wrong decision and tries to take on the man on the mark before he asseses other options.

I'm with the first guy.
We'll bring back Bode then for you two?

Or perhaps you'd prefer Weetra?

Chopper?

When you weigh up the alternatives, Buckley is by far and away the best option we have and considering the crossroads he (and CJ) were at at the beginning of the season, I reckon they have come on remarkably well. A bit of confidence will go a long way.

Interesting there is threads on him and Valenti. I consider the two to be opposites. Valenti is a natural footballer, who probably lacks a bit of pace which has kept him out of AFL to this point. Buckley was obviously drafted because of pace comforming with the recent athlete trend.

Valenti has great skills and football know how, I think and will be a good player for us. Buckley makes A LOT of errors, grabs the ball runs quickly and doesnt know where to go.

Inexcusable mistake when kicking out in the final term.

what a load of bollocks:confused:, there were many bad mistakes by numerous players, he looks good, runs the lines and takes on anyone, considering he's played about 10 games he looks the goods. I know a lot of people on these boards want to get rid of blokes after 3 games but luckily the coaches and football staff know a hell of a lot more than some of you drillbits

I don't want to get rid of him. It just seems that everything I hear about Simon Buckley is that he is the next Nathan Buckley. He shows signs but makes too many wrong decisions and tries to do a bit too much too often. Dare I say it, he may just have too much confidence for his own good.

No no and no. Buckley deserves to be in the team, but that's not saying much with all our injuries.

That is bollocks. Not one Melbourne supporter has compared him to Nathan Buckley.

Bucks got caught maybe twice on Sunday. I can't believe the dislike for him here. If you guys were in charge of our list you would have delisted half of it already.

FFS he is 21 years old and apparently he is a waste of time and we shouldn't persist with him. His disposal has improved since the start of the year, he is rarely caught (Yes, he is rarely caught with the ball) and his defensive pressure has improved.

Bucks will be a gun and I will enjoy watching all of you eat your words.

If you read my above post you will see that I do not want to delist him. I think he has potential to be a very good player, but at this stage that is all it is, potential.

Well you can't do much but show potential at his age.

Pretty silly argument.

He's what we want and need, a bloke (much like Jones) who is willing to take the player and the game on even if it occasionally doesn't come off.

Not being a Melbourne supporter, I have watched your last few games and have been realy impressed with Buckley, the commentators have also been giving him big raps and he looks to be a player of the future.

Not sure is he will be as good as his name sake.
