Good move. Even if we become a better balanced team rather than 18th, it makes us less predictable and should make Cloke and Lynch more effective forwards.

The benefits are obvious when it comes of but its almost always a certain goal to the opposition when it doesn't.

Watching Young miss-kick and turn it over on more than several occasions when swinging it into the middle annoyed the crap out of me this NAB season and is a worry.

I definitely see a greater chance to become a more balanced side this year under the new plan. I don't think the way the media is portraying us as being corridor kings is correct, but theres nothing wrong with a bit more balance and flexability to get a run down the guts.

I think having a more direct option to get to Cloke and now Lynch will be ace, and I think we have the personal to make it work. We've become a bit too predictable with getting it around the boundary a bit too much in recent times.

Given our personnel, it is time for the change to a balanced attacking setup. Malthouse needed a defensive method with a squad of limited capability. We have a much better group now and should change plans to match that. I was always critical of the overly defensive West Coast sides under him when they had the players to blitz oppositions. Not enough flags came to those teams becaause they were too defensive. I'm glad we're leaving it behind.

Can the new game plan also include forwards who make leads inside 50 and teaching players to direct their kicks in front of the forward as opposed to on their heads?

I think they need to play through the corridor if they want to make it possible to deliver to forwards on the lead, rather than just bombing it long.

Perhaps to an extent.. boundary play is slower and more predictable and teams can get numbers in the space that forwards lead into. However i think its also to do with the blokes on the field. For instance, guys like Cloke, Harry, Maxy have the tendency to blaze away as long and deep as possible. On the other hand, when the ball is with guys like Sidey, Pendles, Dids, you can be certain that theyre (generally) looking to spot up an open man.

Really i just want the boys to lower their eyes a little when moving the ball inside 50 and honour the lead

Im very skepitcal of the kicking skills we will have running out of the backline. For it to work we need elite kicking skills. I don't think this is something we are strong in.
Young I would have confidence in. Even Ben Ried I probs would. As for the rest, Harry, Toov, Maxwell, Brown consistency of kicking is a big worry. And if you miss that kick into the middle its coming straight back into your backline to a player which will most likely be unmarked. Where as with the boundary line if its a back kick, or to a contest its out of bounds and a stoppage to which our midfield generally wins.

Boundary is the way to go if you want to play a press, because as you said, it's slower and therefore more of our players can push up into the 50 to lock the ball in. I agree with you on Maxwell and Harry, but it depends on what role Cloke plays. If we play a press, he is more suited leading up the ground and marking 70-80m out from goal.

I would like to think that all players will kick to the open man, but sometimes I feel like the players have different instructions at times.

Apparently we're going up the corridor 29% of the time, which still means we're going elsewhere 71% of the time. The press should be just about as effective as always.

Reid, Young, Seedsman are great kicks generally.

Nat Brown hits his targets 9/10 times is a neat kick but he doesn't have the penetration or low trajectory speed with which the ball moves like the other 3 but he isn't an inaccurate kick.

Russell can be elite but can also fluff them, inconsistantcy is his problem has great depth can hit them low and fast but can be irratic at times generally ok though.

Tooves has been handballing more and knows his limitations most times.

Maxwell see's ball gets ball bombs ball.

Harry see ball get ball run into 22 opposition players get caughts but if he gets through also bombs.

It's why I'd like to see Seedsman take up a perma spot in the back 6 to help movement he has the pace and kicking skills and he looks to be ok 1v1.

Gameplans are only useful if we have the right skills. in 2011 which I argue was our best year (barring that last match) our we seemed to move the ball via the wings but at breathtaking speed. And once we got it in the front 50 we kept it there.

Whether we use the wings or down the corridor is immaterial - the absolute key is getting it forward at high speed. From there the likes of Cloke, Krak and even Dawes did the rest.

All this talk of corridor football is irrelevant - IMHO its also about being unpredictable which we were in 2011

Just happy for the players to have the licence to use the corridor if the opportunity presents itself.

*Young's kicking skills seem to be universally lauded on here but a Hawk mate has called him the "butcher" for the last 4 years. I started watching him closely for that reason and he's no Darren Jarman that's for sure. Not saying he's horrible by foot, but a bit overrated.

I'd say right now the players are over correcting and it'll swing back to a more versatile ball movement after the first few months, where short and long kicks are being used and different angles out of defense
