Would you want him to be coaching us next year, do you think he is ready for the role of being a senior AFL coach. There has been talks that he is going to wait until MM is done with us, then he is going to take over. But it has also been said that he will go to different clubs to see what is it like.

What do you guys want/expect from bucks.

I want Bucks to be an assistant at a couple of clubs serving under at least 2 senior coaches before he comes to us.

Unless we get a different coach and Buck's serves under him for 2 to 3 years.

Mark Williams after Mick Malthouse anyone?

I honestly wouldn't mind him coaching us next year, but in all honesty would prefer bucks.

How many times have we had this conversation this pre season? up near 100 i would say.

If this is MMs last year i would dare say buckley wont be our coach, and if eddie is still in charge Wiliams wont be our coach (good thing).

If this must be MMs last year (TBH i dont see why it has to be but yes its his last year in contract), i want one of these guys

Brad Scott
Damien Hardwick
Scott Burns
Gavin Brown
and of course nathan buckley should be considered, but being an assitant first seems to be his aim

i'd settle for any one of those guys.

Why not Williams Opti?

I don't want Buckley in 2010 personally. Later on, definitely.

2010, Mark Williams is the one I want most, Harwick second preference.

Yeah, how come you wouldn't want williams as a coach opti? I think he would offer a bit to our team.

I personally dont like him: from his persona, soft outside gameplan(failed when the heat is on), recruitment of outside players and he talks more bullshit then our coach ever has.

For a former collingwood captain you think he would be somewhat nicer in his comments directed at his former team. I also have a feeling that eddie doesnt really like him either.

Also much prefer to go a younger coach, with a record of tough accountable football

Never looked at it like that. Very valid points.

Bugger Williams! lol

Lol i understand many rate Williams i dont he had a star studded list from 01 to 04 and he won 1 premiership.

But i also understand not everyone will see it like me so each to their own

I thought it was a given wasn't it :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Id love to see it happen in fact it is my dream I think it depends on if MM is gone or not I have no doubt if MM isn't there Buckley will be at the helm

He was up against one of the best ever teams to play the game in Brisbane....surely you can't be critical of him for that?

He made 1 GF in that time, through all of those years it should of been his side versus the aforementioned Brisbane side.

One squad of battlers and no names, twice owned his side in cut throat finals and played in two GFs aswell.

If i can say we should of won one of 02 or 03 i can be critical of Williams not snatching at least another GF appearance in that time

But he managed to get them up for the big one that counted didn't he?

Guys like the Cornes brothers and the Burgoyne brothers are players who I really think are quite soft mentally. On a big game day, they can be hit and miss imo, this is out of William's control that his most important players are a bit like this.

I think you're being quite harsh on Collingwood's 02/03 teams as well....battlers and no names? Really?

It is the coach's job to get is players up for match day, our coach is fantastic at it. Williams through his hubris or whatever has never been able to do it, his mind games in 02 when he completely owned himself without MM uttering a word was hilarious.

Also he got them up once, he lost in straight sets in 01 losing a home final after leading a 3qtr time, he lost to rank outsiders collingwood in 02 and then got smashed at the gabba, lost to even bigger outsiders in sydney at home and then proceeded to get belted by us at the MCG, and then in 04 bar some miracle work from Wanganeen in the last and the ground invasion in the first almost lost another home final.

His record in big matches is scrathy at best, our side always plays big matches it is not a good match.

On our 02 and 03 teams, we had some class in Buckley, Burns, Licuria, tarrant and Rocca, but in 02 especially clement, presti and wakelin were no names to everyone bar collingwood supporters. Our team sheets on both GF days were not great sides, players like Steinfort, Freeborn(harsh), Betheras, Walker, Kinnear, Lokan, Rhyce Shaw, Cole, McKee etc were no namers and battlers as i said even our youth then Davis, Didak and so on were patchy and only recently top liners.

He was collingwood captain and walked out on us for more money to go to the brisbane bears... why would you want a traitor back at our club... his a hack we don't need or want him....

Spot on Opti. I am right with you especially re: Williams. I think coaching and the way it is rated is pretty shallow. Over the last 2 years we have had coaches who were on the verge of being sacked go on to win premierships and be touted as the best coach in the league. It just goes to really highlight how much of coaching has to do with the list your in charge of.

Williams over that 4 year period had a great list, good enough to win a few minor premierships. They consistantly failed in the finals and a lot of that IMO comes down to the style of game which they played and he constructed. High possesion outside football as plan A and B is always going to come undone in finals football. When the intensity goes up you don't get the same time and space on the ball to fooling around with it like Port attempted too.

On Bucks I still think being an assistant at AFL level should be a must for future AFL coaches.

I wonder if Paul Roos would come to Collingwood for a record coaching deal? Maybe it’s a year or two too late if you subscribe to this new young coach/modern game theory. An untried coach is a major roll of the dice. I’d be happy enough to replace MM with a young coach if we don’t win the flag this year but I’d be happier to pay Roos $5m+ for the next 4 years.

Mark Williams is as tough as they come Opti.

He makes those comments cause he is a stirrer, he respects and loves the club mate.

Pretty sure Roos is on the record as saying he would only ever coach at Sydney but coaches have changed their mind before and it would be well worth dangling the contract in front of him.

Apart from that, Hardwick or Brad Scott. Fit the mould of tough backline players that have played in successful sides.

He mybe tough but he gets his team laying rubbish outside shit an he blames everyone bar himself, williams at collingwood no thank you

isnt that like most coaches but?

Williams can coach, his record in finals aint flash but he plays a good brand of footy.

i wouldnt be against him coming back to Collingwood but obviously im hanging out for the great man, Number 5.

I'd argue that. He plays a free flowing style of football yes but not a good one IMO. He has too many eggs in the one basket I.E outside finishing over possesion running football. Which is why his finals record is so poor. With the more frantic and higher intensity the skills dwindle just enough and they are not good enough in contested situations to make up for that. It's an exact reverse of Malthouse who plays high contested football which means his teams often have better then expected finals results as they are more well drilled for that kind of pressure.

Ive always considered the finals record of coaches the most important part of their coaching record.

He maybe 70% in the H&A season but if he wins 1 of ever 4 finals games there is an issue
