Why is everyone calling Burton Spider?

He has referred to himself as this in some of the Hawk TV videos e.g. Mitch and Hodge came over and said, Spider, Clarko wants to see you....

We aren't that imaginative at Hawthorn re nicknames.

Hardwick gets Dimma
Burton gets Spider

Did Clarko play with Spider at North?

Hardwick had Dimma already
Think Lovell already had Chopper too

Just thinking in terms of draft picks (and I know it doesn't mean much once they've been playing for a while) but big boy, Vickery o'rourke and o'meara were all drafted top 10.

Burton's injuries had him slide to us and Mitchell was f/s so who knows where he would have gone (although with a kicking action likethat I wouldn't expect top 10)

Just an observation.

If you add Roughy Hodge and Burgoyne to that list we nearly have as many top 10 picks on our list as the amount of top 10 picks GWS or GC get each year

And Bailey is still just 'Big Max.'

Both are exciting prospects but I'm more revved up about Burton.

In 40 odd games we've seen what JOM can do. Electric, but is he going to give us any more than what he's already shown?

Burton has only played a couple of games and already shown glimpses of intelligence and poise, as well as freakish ability.

Regardless of who ends up "better", the future looks bright.

So what, as Leigh Matthews said, the best debut season since Judd isn't enough for you? At the end of his second season if any club could pick one player to recruit he would have been in the conversation...

The reality is we havent seen what JOM can do - in the 2 years he was on the park he was a 19/20 year old kid still finding his way and was already one of the better midfielders in the league. If his knee comes good there is no telling how good he can be.

Burton looks like a solid prospect but lets be honest he wasnt in the top 10 players on the park in the games he played whilst JOM was getting brownlow votes and finishing 3rd in the club B&F (which was won by the brownlow winner BTW).

Um, sure, but JOM's great games were pre knee injury. Burton's games you're referring to were post knee injury, after a limited pre-season and weeks away from football recovering from surgery removing the metal from his leg. That's an unfair playing field you've presented there.

O'Meara is the obvious choice. Positive stuff is coming out about the state of his knee which is exciting.

Burton could be anything. He has swagger and loads of talent, so I can see why he's other's choice.

Playing in the midfield gets more noticed but with Burgoyne to retire (and Gibbo and Hodge around the same time) in the near future, if Burton can play that contested ball beast with excellent disposal off half back he will be critical. Some midfield minutes if he wants. Hope we can't split them at the end of their careers. The lack of high quality disposal beasts off half back in the future and full forward has me worried so if one can fill that role, great news.

I think they are as exciting in their own ways as they are completely different players.

O'Meara has the potential to be one of the best mids in the league if he can get his body right. Seemed to be a younger version of danger running out of packs and just being able to get the ball when ever he wants. Also uses the ball well when he started his career.

Burton looks to be the next burgoyne/hodge roll. Off the halfback or fwd flank. Has a cool, calm collectiveness about him and showed in the finals as well which is also good. That was coming off a badly broken knee as well and now gets a pre-season.

How amazing will it be if JOM can stay injury free from here on. That little taste of his greatness he gave us against the Bulldogs has gotten us more optimistic than we were when this thread started. Team up Burton, JOM, TMitch, and even Hardwick, we've got a fairly solid unit going through!
