I thought Channel 9's blatant 'WE HAVE THE BEST COVERAGE WATCH US' was sickening.

Have a listen to 3AW.
Not an hour goes past where they don't tell you just how good they are, how they're the station to trust in these tough times etc.

I've also noticed that since the bushfires they've also been running many promos suggesting Neil Mitchell is 'the voice of the people', how he is here to 'help Victoria survive' and basically that he is changing the world, one morning session at a time.

Pure, self-serving drivel.

Oh, I thought it was 'the voice of the devil'. Thanks for the clarification;)

It's the way the media behaves in Australia which feeds my apathy. We have the worst "free" media in the world.

Sometimes the cynic in me feels that the media gun for these events so they can do what they do.

Don't underestimate the Stefanovic3000.

Karl Stefanovic live from the scene [sorry in advance if you think this is crass]

very good :D

oh and I agree with most of what has been said. The media have been just disgraceful with their coverage and you get the sense that some of them are thriving in all the misery. Some reporters at the scene just keep pushing the survivors until they break. I guess it makes good TV

Yes i'm going there.... but Tony Jones was sad Sunday night with Brian Naylor's passing..... last night he was up to his old tricks :thumbsd:, barging in on people's personal space (and venturing into a tent to see what it looked like on the inside). Whoopie doo

Without media, these victims would never be able to tell their story. And without their story Australia would just move on.

True, very true but there is a Balance and the commercial media is frankly making huge profits from this disaster.

Hi Karl hows it going?

Seriously that’s the worst justification I have ever heard! People have been telling stories for thousands of years without the “media”! They don’t need some moronic TV presenter in their face with a camera patting them on the shoulder whilst asking “how does it feel to lose everything you have”

This wasn't a justification. This wasn't a way of condoning or approving the interviewers style.

It is, and was, and will be, merely a comment that says that without the media. The whole of Australia would not be bleeding their hearts out right now.

We would have just moved on.

After watching twenty minutes of Channel 9's news, i had to turn it off.

Seeing reporters constantly prodding victims, with the obvious intent of eliciting tears, is sickening and i can't fathom how those reporters (and their superiors) can justify it in their own minds.

i saw two people being reunited, and u can see five cameras around them

disgraceful.

I saw that.

They were at pains to tell us, again and again, that Channel 9 made the reunion possible, then they showed us the reporter carrying the woman's bags, and to top it off, at the end of the story the couple are walking away, arm in arm, only for the reporter, Simon Bouda, to awkwardly throw his arm around them both, as if to say 'i made all this possible'.

Pathetic.

Why is this being called 'Australia's worst natural disaster' all of a sudden?
Because it is?
Hmm i'm not sure
I think the 2005 Ashes teams was worse :o
Why do you think
Whilst the 2005 Ashes series was an abomination, scooterb has a reasonable point at least regarding lives lost.

The Spanish flu is natural and at 12,000+ is clearly the worst disaster ever.

Channel 9 were disgusting tonight - agree. That whole reunion was nice and all but they kept saying "we are the ones who united them" and promoted it as an exclusive. They are trying to make out like they are heroes.

But also all the other cameras in the area who rushed to get thier shot too. I don't know what is worse.

I'm pretty sure a couple of Diptheria epidemics killed more than these fires also.

But hey we are austraaalyia, the best campaignerry in the world! Ask the media!

They are all so proud that this has wiped off the main stories around the world. Go you good thing.

Expect the fires to be rehashed and the media reminding us for a long time now. They just love playing it as much as they can.

Have we got an official name for the disaster?

"black Saturday"

"Ash Saturday"

We do need a poignant name. The meejia are off the ball on this!

"Kinglake of Fire"? (Tongue in cheek!)

"The Hellfires" in honour of Rudd claiming that hell had visited us.

It's not easy for a run of the mill early February Saturday afternoon!

Hopefully Karl and Kochie will be able to decide on this overnight and inform us over breakie...

My elderly mother has dementia but still has her wits about her but today is a bad day for her. I just turned the channel to a foxtel I think Judge Judy episode as mum was sitting there crying and getting all worked. She got a little more worked up at me changing the channel but she soon settled down a bit.

The coverage is going to far.
