The reason we were looking to trade for him was cover. If we lose one of Westhoff or Schulz to a long term injury, we're screwed. When you're around the mark, you need depth so that you don't blow the chance a flag because you can't replace a player.

Same reason we got Renouf despite having Lobbe and Redden in the locker.

That KPF is not necessarily going to be Butcher. Hinkley started Butcher this season on the back of poor trials and a poor 2013 sanfl season. Butcher's played better since his dropping but S Gray and Neade have been selected instead. If Hinkley can lure a better tall forward than Butcher, he'll get him. Hinkley was interested in making a play to lure Jesse White to Port before he began improving at the Swans.
In a press conference earlier In the year Hinkley said that everyone knew that Butcher has what it takes to be a gun player but the question is to get his body to stand up at AFL level.
That was the question then and it's still the question now, no different to Hartlett a couple of years ago.
Once his body is right the rest will come including his set shots.

Re - Jesse White ... Hinkley admitted to targetting Jesse White as a recruit for 2014. Why would Hinkley want him when he's got Butcher in the making? You can call the guy a hack but last year and this year he's been playing afl and kicking goals. The point is that Hinkley looked to bring in the third tall forward from elsewhere.
Can't put all of your hope into a solitary KPF option. Why recruit Shaw/Harvey if Butcher could make it? Stupid post.

With Shaw kicking 4 to 3/4 time would he be a chance to play anytime soon? We need him or Butcher out there imo as I believe Westhoff plays better with a 3rd tall option.Just a thought

John Butcher was very good for the Magpies today. It is obvious he is a leader and stands up for the younger players. He flew the flag on quite a few occasions today, including during the 'Flynn high bump' situation.
John competed well all day and, most pleasingly, utilised a consistent set shot at goal routine all game today for a good return of 3 goals.
Critically, with the game in the balance, he took a good mark in the center of the ground, instructed Jakey to run on, and then pumped the ball forward with a spiral punt which resulted in a goal.

<3 That kind of thing is really heartwarming. Maybe that sort of leadership is what they've been looking for out of Butch.

Finally.Hopefully that can get him into the side against the Bulldogs.I feel we need him as the 3rd tall as it releases Westhoff and Hoff plays his best footy with a 3rd tall in the side.Hopefully Butch can get in and stay in.

That's my point. Hinkley will invest in more than one KPF and the better recruit will win selection. People are arguing that it should be Butcher being selected for afl duty and nothing but him. You came in mid-way in a discussion, stupid.

Just to prove it's not just Butchermania at the El_Scorcho household, if Mason Shaw has a really good game this week, i'd be happy to see either of them in. We need another tall forward.
Based on today's game, IN: Shaw.

Butchers biggest problem is his mind

mind of a midget when he is out there with no confidence

lots of confidence great player

think he will be a better player if he can play second fiddle his whole career, less pressure

Certainly knows how to dominate Footscray:

Hopefully we can reverse that quarter time score!

Ahhh... that game. A 10-goal smacking has never felt so good.

And then he backed up with a super-impressive outing in The Robbery the following week.

And then Brett Ebert cut off his leads and jumped into him all day at Adelaide Oval. Masterstroke.

Butch probably had his best game for the club today. Forget the stats sheet, he took the best defender and directed Harvey and Shaw when to lead and where to go all day (Kicking 10 goals, 3 between our key posts was real handy). Competed powerfully in the air and rarely got beaten and his confidence grew throughout the game.

His cat-like movement at ground level had definite confidence and an aggression I'm not sure I've seen - At one point when the game was still there to be won he moved up to the wing and when the ball hit the deck tackled and pressured multiple Eagles players one after the other.

On top of that, when Flynny K.O.'d the Eagles player, one of the first people to be there ripping players off of him and look after his mate was Butch.

The best way to describe his game? He stood up, for himself and his teammates.

Bad post PM.
Butcher is related to Pittard so he was shit and both should be delisted midseason.

One thing you will definitely get from Butch is chasing and harassing of a Jake Neade standard, and that's from a 197cm big man. That is super-important in the modern game and if Kenny is seeing that from John his name moves up the magnetic board.

Some of the comments coming out of the weekend sanfl game suggest he's building his confidence as a team contributor not just a goal scorer and that can only be good. The goal kicking will follow.

Not the first time ive seen it, but the first time it really stood out being a close game, that he was trying to show leader ship. Plus streaking through the middle taking a nice mark and willing neade onto the ball for the goal was excellent. A lot og f his work goes unnoticed. And stats only tell half the story...
Bring in the BUTCH!

Shaw was taken in the same draft (no. 30) as Hawthorn's Tim O'Brien (no. 29). O'Brien hasn't exactly set the world alight but he's only had 3 games and he hasn't had the injury setbacks Shaw has had. I would give Shaw a go next season when he has had a good go in the SANFL, unless he really shows something and we need to cover players.
