And I'm not looking to spend more than $400.

One that has caught my eye with some good reviews is the Kodak cx7430, which is $399.

If anyone has any good advice as to which one around $400 worth be worth a look, feel free to let us know!

And if the digital camera gurus are just going to give me the 'you wont get much for $400' crap, then dont bother.

Cheers.

probably should go for atleast a 5 megapixel. they can produce great quality photos

seen some sony ones for 500 bucks but perhaps if you wait a tad you might be able 2 get one for 400

What do you want it for?

How good a photographer are you?

Just want it for a camera - I'm not some photographer guy.

Just to muck around with, take on holidays and to capture some quality drunken-lads moments ;)

Basically just for general use.

In that case, the cx 7430 should do the job nicely.

A lot of cameras have inflated prices because of additional features that, by the sounds of it, you will never ever use. This one is aimed squarely at the recreational users.

The only issue that I can see is that it only comes with 16MB of memory, which unless you're carrying a laptop to download the card into at regular intervals, is nowhere near enough.
You're probably going to have to fork out another $80-90 for a 128MB card.

Sounds like I could get that 128MB card for Christmas, 16MB could be ok for a couple of months till then?

Cheers mate.

What he said.

The 16 will do okay for the drunken-lads bits, and the mucking around.
It will not do to take on holidays - you'll get about 20 high-quality images on the card, or 40-50 low quality ones.

On the 128MB card, you'd get 320 high-quality images...

5 megapixel doesn't mean you get the best "quailty" photos. Just means you are able to enlarge the photo to A1 size without too much noise. Which most people don't do. Infact you probably can push a 3 megapixel to do just that. Look at the lens, look at the brands you are buying. 3-4megapixel will do any job just fine.

You watch a lot of the 3megapixel cameras (mostly from canon) will drop price next month. As soon as next year many more will drop.

Most photography labs around aussie and overseas can download your card/memory onto a cd.

128 SD cards (do suite the Kodak)- I'm selling them for $59,
256 SD cards-$89.

I'm selling the Nikon CP3200 for $349, normally discount the card when buying a camera at the same time!

simple and easy to use cameras ;) i'll be getting one soon or maybe get my 3100 back from the wholesalers!

BTW - does a 4 mega-pixel one kick the ******** out of a 3.1 mega-pixel one, or cant you really tell the difference?

My friend has a 4 mega-pixel one, and I want one as good as his..

on a 4x6in photo, you wont tell any difference between a 2,3,4 megapixel camera. If you get a nikon you might find your photos a tad sharper than other brands.

When you start printing out photos to A3 sizes thats when you'll notice the difference.

P.S- Don't print at home. Cost you way to much to print at home. Check out a Fuji Lab in your local area with a Frontier system. Best Quailty photos around.

*shameless plug*

maybe a shameless plug but at least your giving them the truth

optical zoom > anything over 3 mega pixel, and these days its cheaper and easier to create your own photo album cd.

teds price 10.00 bucks
50 cents a cd at home:)

a good canon individual cartrige printer for all round printing the pixma 3000/4000

This is good advice, and with that in mind i'd be recommending the canon ixus 430 for about the price you're looking for. I have the ixus 500 it's 5meg instead of 4.3meg but they're basically similar cameras, and they take fantastic photos using good lenses.

Can someone explain what the go is with digital/optical lens?

What's the difference? Do you need both optical and digital lens? What x do you need? And does the strength of your lens have anything to do with the megapixels?
